I noticed today that the game looks better running in the default 1024x768 rather than the 1680x1050 my monitor supports.

Not really surprised, I just thought it was interesting. I guess sprite-based games don't really benefit any from upscaling, unless you use it to display more of the play area, which isn't really fair in a multiplayer game.

this varies pretty widely across different graphics cards and monitors.

using in game stretching vs monitor stretching the image looks a lot less grainy. IE the game does a better job

where as nvidia driver scaling (instead of monitor) looks pretty close to the game stretching but I still find the game to be less grainy.

there are only a handful of cases where we use opengl draw line and draw rect that get broken using the game scaling. (health boxes and drop down boxes in the graphics options menu come to mind). So other than that i've found in game stretching to be better than the rest.
