Here are some title theme ideas for the game that were created by Redshift. I know that there is already a current theme song, but just thought it would be worthwhile to get some feedback on what people thought of these other versions. Just so there is full disclosure, Redshift is my cousin, so I am of course going to be biased.

Here is the latest theme idea which is more of a military style:

http://www.thesins.info/music/demo6.mp3

Here are some earlier ideas which were more geared towards a "fun" style:

http://www.thesins.info/music/demo4.mp3
http://www.thesins.info/music/demo3.mp3
http://www.thesins.info/music/demo2.mp3

Interested to hear what people think of the styles, how they fit with the game, likes/dislikes, etc.

I will now repeat my old feedback so that people listening to these for the first time will be subconsciously influenced by my opinions:

#6: Better than the current song imo, mostly because the sound is richer / better quality. It's not silly enough though. And nowhere near as good as the choral version of the Altitude theme, which is the greatest thing ever made.

#4: Not really a fan. The high pitched instrument is really shrill and just I dunno. Also doesn't really fit the game imo.

#3: Kind of fun/cute, but not appropriate for the game. Has kind of an intentional retro NES era feel to me. Would work well for Noitu Love or something!

#2: Sounds like it would play during the credits of Wizball. I think this is too slow / techno-y for Alt.

I actually think the current song could work quite well if it had some more polish (doesn't have rich, full, real instrument-y sounds). It's the right direction tho I think - goofy but martial at the same time.

I like demo6 a lot; like the current theme song, the serious and comic themes of the game are blended together very nicely, even if it's only the orchestral tone giving it a more epic feeling.

The older demos are nice pieces in their own right, but I don't feel it matches the mood of Altitude; they sound like something I'd hear while playing the old SNES F-Zero. Not quite the same genre as Altitude, but close. Along those lines, I think they could be greatly improved by replacing the "synthesized" feel with something more natural.

I'm still waiting for John Williams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Williams) to submit his themes to us as I hear he's addicted to altitude...

:D

(this is a joke btw)

Thanks for the wiki link. I am not sure anyone would have known who you were talking about without that

The current Vi theme used in the game is a combo of bf 1942 and TF2 since we told her we liked those songs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gylo7Ak6z3Y -bf1942 (best game song ever imo)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eDGD7kwsxM - tf2 theme 1

you can actually hear vi theme alternate between bf1942 and tf2 so it's good. what i don't like is it get boring... altitude is suppose to be fast paced action... this piece doesn't go anywhere imho. I also dislike jazz so that part drives me nuts but all in all it's good.

NickChris theme 2:
I'm incapable of appreciating even the beat since this style/sound drives me nuts.

NickChris theme 3:
reminds of crappy nintendo games like zelda or some other lame game... extremely boring I fell like im playing some crap RPG on nintendo sitting in a shop doing nothing.

NickChris theme 4:
airwolf (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXehSng0NV4) for the nintendo? :D. Again I can't stand "retro" stuff. Altitude is not retro... the planes are high poly count 3D models rendered from 3DSMax and then run through an additional 5 (maybe 6) passes through Photoshop.

NickChris theme 6:
It's cool... I wouldn't say it's Altitude at all. It's very suspenseful like im being built up for a scary part of some movie? I duno.
I think my problem with this theme is it feels like a tv show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AepyGm9Me6w&feature=PlayList&p=AB12C6F53B255574&index=13). There isnt really any bass to get me pumped up.

Anyways... all work by Vi and Nick is amazing and we are lucky to have it!

To put things into perspective of how insanely difficult sound/music is: We contracted 2 professional sound guys and purchased several sound packs. After spending 2 weeks straight (plus time here and there, aka we spent hundreds of hours on sound) and listening to 2,241 different sounds we finally got the current Altitude sound effects which still have a lot of rough edges. We've also had some professional composers submit theme ideas that don't hold a candle to Chris and Vi's work.

Just to clarify, I am Nick (Maimer) and my cousin is Chris (Redshift). I didn't do anything with the music, it was all my cousin. I was just posting them.

Cool, looks like we're starting a new genre of Altitude-related music.

What program and soundsets does Chris use? I'm used to working with real instruments, so the current Altitude theme is shamefully produced using Sibelius.

Karl, you didn't tell me you had other professional composers submitting ideas! I'm actually interested in what they've sent.

man, screw the standard bf1942 theme, it's all about the battlefield heroes theme (which I know they also listened to):
http://www.battlefield-heroes.com/media/theme-music-and-user-bars

tf2 theme is awesome tho

and people should check out gibbage for an example of another indie game with a really fun theme.

and wtf is with your hate for retro games, karl? t.t

I agree that the Battlefield Heroes theme seems to be a much better fit in terms of style for Altitude than BF1942. I am not saying I don't like BF1942, just much too serious for Altitude me thinks.

I always had this idea in my head that the Altitude theme would have a kazoo in it.

Thanks guys -- I appreciate the feedback so far. I think a lot of the issues that both Vi and I are running into are instrument related. With my earlier demos, I was experimenting with synthetic and analog instruments, but clearly some people take issue with that lol. Ryebone pretty much said what I was looking for though: if you can separate melody and chord progression from instrumentation, it may be easier to evaluate a theme. That said, I can easily change the tempo, arrangement, and instruments within any track; thatís the beauty of digital music. Iím not sure how difficult it is for people to make that mental distinction though.

Along those lines, not every demo is at the same stage of development. Some are just short loops, but that doesnít necessarily mean they would stay that way. Each was designed with a melody or progression in mind. Itís pretty easy to develop a two or three minute song if you have a melody and some idea about the rest of the arrangement. I think the best way to think about it is, would you walk away whistling any one of these tunes?

With the current theme, I think Vi did a good job conveying the right mood for the game. The soft-synth plug-in does make it feel a little limited, so it would be interesting to hear the theme updated in some respect. To answer your question, Vi, this is the basic studio I am running:

ē Cubase 5 as host sequencer (with several built-in soft synths and plug-ins)
ē Halion Symphonic Orchestra (as you can hear in the 6th demo)
ē Korg Triton (good mix of synthetic and acoustic sounds, although the board is starting to sound a little dated)
ē Korg MicroKorg (amazing little analog-modeling synth)

Overall, I think it would be helpful to see what kind of music people hear in their heads when they play Altitude. Providing other game music would be helpful. Even just listing a few adjectives could help. I donít have much experience composing in this genre, so I kind of threw out a bunch of styles at Lamís and Karlís loose guidelines. I think the right approach would be to hear from the Altitude community before really tackling any type of music for the game, its promotion, etc.

he wasn't a professional composer per say. He just did sound for video games (worked w/ dio). He gave us very rough drafts that we didn't take any further due to time and money constraints... Describing sounds/music over email is an exercise in futility.

and wtf is with your hate for retro games, karl? t.t
duno... guess i just hate old stuff and i really hate new stuff made to look like old crap. Gang garison (http://www.ganggarrison.com/) for example could be fun but they intentionally made it suck aka retro.

Well if its instrumentalists you need, I go to a music conservatory so I know a ton of them. I myself also play bass (classical/jazz, not electric bass). Also my roommate is an audio engineer so he can record us. We likely won't be able to do anything until fall, but let me know what you need and I'll ask around. I'm sure a lot of people would like the opportunity to do something like this.

Additionally my roommate (the audio engineer) is also a producer and has access to an awesome electronic music studio, if you are in need of quality sounds.

email me: cja20@case.edu or aim: tombrowkah

Thanks!

Karl, I think this short sample would fit perfectly for your retro style Nimbly Games / Cat with Moon company splash screen.

I'd just like to say I'm totally impressed by Vi and Redshift. As someone who is not musically inclined AT ALL, it blows my mind that people can come up with stuff this good.

For the record, I like the current theme best. I like #6's richer sound, but it sounds like an RPG soundtrack to me. If the current theme could be embellished a bit to sound less like a midi file, it would be great!

Maybe some sort of Collaboration between Redshift and I could keep the music of the current theme but have it produced better so that it sounds more orchestral. I bet he could make that sax solo into a bitchin' electric guitar solo, too. Though WHY you wouldn't want the version like the current one but with chorus, that boggles my mind.

I remixed an old song for you Karl because I know you were looking for a retro song to go with your retro style game.
