boots how do you feel about the ability of esports to grow given that unlike traditional sports there are really no 'teams' to route for in 'leagues'

WHAT?! IPL, EGMCSL, GSTL!?!?! There are team leagues all the time... That propel esports to grow. However just because you're rooting for 1 player in 1v1 league game play doesn't mean you're not (root)ing (not route) for a whole team to do well. However, it is important to understand that what you said does not hinder the growth of sc2 and esports in general. The admiration people have for a single players encourages them to drive across the country to watch that player play. That passion allows esports to grow. That passion is also behind the reason people pay 20-30 dollars to watch streams of leagues all weekend. So yes, you're rooting for one player to do well in a league, but i also like to think that people want the team associated with that player to do well.

no i mean, there is not one dominant league
there are ****-all tournaments, leagues, and 1v1 things look at MMA, which is imo a fairly similar thing until UFC, MMA was spread to the four corners of the earth and nobody knew what was what does SC2 need a similar model (1 dominant league, bunch of lesser leagues/events for the ****tier/up and coming people), or can the current status quo continue to grow? |

also, at what point do you think the sport will realize that best of X matches are an impossible model for a general audience (note: MLB does not play a best of 3 series in one day)? will it require exponential growth and acclimation to a wider audiences needs or will it simply acquire a distribution model (e.g. time slots) that forces the sport to condense the length of matches?

subnote: will a limited time model and potential "best of 1" series force players to abandon risky early game strategies in favor of a balanced macro game
sub-subnote: like boxing and MMA, SC2 matches can last from mere minutes to a long, long time (note: long being a relative term for the aforementioned h2h combat sports). do you think an expanded viewership will be annoyed by a time slot model where games potentially (and likely frequently) will end in mere minutes? will players be pressured to play safer, macro games for the sake of the audience? is it possible for sc2 to follow a traditional model to engage a wider audience, or will such a model be untenable? |

SC2 is the only viable option nowadays. I'd had another run but quickly decided to quit once more in disgust of SC2's ugly meta-game. People don't realize the more they work themselves up in the ladder, the more frustrated they get. Sadly HOTS appears to tell us Blizzard isn't up to the task of creating something nearly as good as BW... Oh well, e-sports has a long (and fruitful) future.

Hmm no thats not what I asked.
I'm not trying to create a new bw/sc2 debate or whatever. Remove the sc2 in my question if it helps you understand better. I'm talking more about the big picture here, why do you want to make esports more popular ? And in particular sc2 esports because thats what we're talking about here. |

I neglected answering your question altogether at that time.
One can write much on why e-sports should or should not become more popular. It's fun and in certain cases intellectually challenging. It creates communities and markets. Competition is great. So is winning, fame and money. However, the road of becoming a pro-gamer often doesn't contain a lot of interactivity, so downsides include guys getting socially awkward and isolated and a tendency to procrastinate. This and other psychological subtleties make people underperform in life. No, I don't want to make 'SC2 e-sports' more popular because I think the game is fundamentally wrong and ugly. It's also relatively uninteresting to play and watch. Apparently games which sell have a long way to go. A game of this genre can be so much greater. |

TOO SERIOUS.
if you enjoy the game play it. if you enjoy watching the game watch it. if you hate it leave it. |

One enjoys using heroine, does that mean they should?
