The soldier's that landed on the beaches of Normandy were forced to participate a military wide football league before the invasion. There were several reasons for this, other than the obvious need for R&R. For one, the high impact, fast paced nature of the sport physically and mentally prepared the soldier's to the conditions they would be facing on D-Day. Also, it allowed the military to train their men to moving on sand (they practiced on beaches) without fear of the German intelligence catching wind of their plans.

American strategists considered using soccer instead of football but scrapped the idea out of fear that U.S. soldiers would get "le tired."

Fun Fact: Dr. John Abrams was the starting offensive tackle for the '85 Chicago Bears. He retired shortly afterwards, received his doctorate from Yale and now teaches history at Oxford University.

This is him.

wuts all this hand egg chat?

I can see why football, rather than handegg, would be used to prepare the troops, the stamina required to run for 90 minutes without a break every 30 second while some official buggers about, would be useful. Also the teamwork required to work on the fly rather than plan every move in the aforementioned breaks. That an the dexterity required to place a shot perfectly in the top corner, curving it round the goalie.

That's what you were talking about, right? What's soccer? I can only assume it uses socks in some form of ritual, though doubtless with breaks every 30 seconds to the players can lick any clothing inflicted wounds.

You're right. The opening scene of Saving Private Ryan should have shown a bunch of soldiers briskly jogging across the rolling plains of France for an hour and a half.

TBH, I think that's what the vast majority of D - day was, once the initial barrier had been broken through.

The english were the ones who came up with the word "soccer."

Also, hockey is pretty damn sweet. If you're a sports fan and you haven't seen post-lockout playoff hockey in HD, you really need to. LIKE REALLY. It's intense.

****in aves. Anyways, I have a growler of Montana's finest brew on the Blues taking the Stanley cup. So no matter what, I'm rooting against the Sharks.

I completely forgot about this thread. In case you didn't know this last year, everything I said was a work of fiction.

This guy is an injury problem and has only scored 9 goals all year. Yeah sure he's scored some big ones lately but he isn't worth the money he is getting. I was happy when the Wild got rid of him.
