How about a button to completely cut off your engine, so u can keep falling forwards but turn around and shoot without losing speed from powering down?

It's called Rev thrust?

WRONG!! an engine cut button would be useful for technique though. then all the pros would use it constantly

Its called Stalling.

My bad, I thought he meant fall backwards while firing. And yeah, it's called stalling.

what the OP is suggesting is slightly different from what stalling does. you know how when you reverse thrust, and then you stop reverse thrusting, you still fly around at the same speed you were? something like that except for forwards.
currently stalling requires you to throttle all the way down first, causing you to lose speed before you are able to turn without changing your direction. |

So basically the equivalent to a 'strafe shoot' typically seen in an fps game. I actually like the idea, but sadly don't think it will ever be implemented.

Reason: in an old post I suggested a few things introducing at least one new button, and everyone was crazy about having to handle one more key. -_-' I think most of players here just like the way it is and are not interested in a more articulated and complex game (single/multi players mission, bigger arsenal, advanced aircraft controls like flaps, spoilers [those would be perfect for what you are suggesting], landing gear,..). |

What he is suggesting has nothing to do with stalling.
The way the game works right now: UP and DOWN control SPEED The way he wants it to be: UP and DOWN control ACCELERATION (if it worked this way you could turn off your engine and keep flying forward, then you would start losing altitude because you're going too slow, you would still be able to glade but you wouldnt be able to climb. Like a real airplane) I think the game would be awesome if it worked this way, but it's never going to happen, it would be a completely different game. |

Well, Up arrow and Down arrow do work like they would on a real airplane. What they do is provide more thrust, not necessarily greater speed. For instance, you can throttle up all the way in-game and actually be losing speed, provided you're in a climb, turn, and/or firing a weapon with recoil. With the flight model the game has, an engine cutoff would do what Feng9 says it should do, more or less, but perhaps not as dramatically as one would expect/want. "Strafing" would be difficult to set up and control. It could give the plane a great blast of maneuverability very quickly, though, which would affect the way people dogfight in-game.
Might be cool to put this in a Blue perk that also had the quick throttle control Reverse Thrust has, to make a kind of "high-performance" perk. |

You sure hurry?
Cause it seems to me that DOWN arrow actually slows down the plane until it goes at a certain speed. I dont think planes have such powerful brakes... |

isn't that the same concept as a Miranda though....?

OP, you'd really like Freelancer. You can engine kill in that (due to space)

Well, the effects are exaggerated, as if you had a strong headwind on you, but essentially the engine provides thrust. It's not a flight sim, so my word isn't necessarily law, but the arrows are more of a thrust thing overall. Anywho, the point I was trying to make was that this control wouldn't really work as intended, but could be useful in other ways, especially to turn-based airplanes like Bipe and Loopy.

Hmm, yes judging from the way planes behave in altitude I would say they're flying in a very viscous atmosphere.

Atmosphere is fine, but being so small (a few pixels or little more) Reynolds number is small too. Viscous forces prevail onto inertial forces, so that when thrust drops a severe deceleration occurs.
