Default What happened to the ban length dialogue?

One feature I found very useful in earlier versions of the game was the ability to specify an amount of time to ban someone from a server. However, it seems to have disappeared (probably as the result of a recent patch)! So when I banned someone, they told me they had been banned for 37 years instead of the 10 minutes I was hoping for. So I guess I have two questions:

1. Why was the ability to specify ban length removed?

2. If it has to be this way, what is the default time for banning? 37 years seems a pretty random number.

Admins of a server enter in the amount of time (in minutes) the ban is for.
So in order to keep you banned for 37 years, all they have to do is ban you for 19,460,520 minutes. Not too hard!

Ah, but that's just the way it used to be. Now it seems that the only parameters you can enter in the ban dialogue box are the username of the person to be banned and the reason for banning them. The amount of time to ban them for just isn't there.

Or maybe I'm mistaken?

It was removed: the thinking was that it caused too much confusion (how do you permaban? 0?) and that most bans really ought to be forever. I'm open to adding it back, but some find it confusing...

That makes perfect sense. However, I personally thought it was a great feature as often you want to remove someone from a server for some time between 2 minutes and forever. To me it seems that making it a tad less confusing has also brought it's functionality down a notch...

Id like to be able to control the length of bans. Id prefer if there was a way to keep someone from coming back after the 2min kick time but at the same time not banned for life. Perhaps change the parameters from minutes to hours though.

Leave ban as it is and add a kick x where x would be number of minutes kicked, so it could be used as a temp ban

I know I'm not supposed to bump this but I'm going to anyway, because there is really no reason for this feature not to be re-implemented.

I've given some thought to the problems with the ban system lately, and it really would be better if there was some way to specify ban length. At the moment, you can only have someone kicked for 2 minutes or 37 years. What if you only want them banned for the next day or so because they are being annoying in the Proleague servers during a match? We have here situations such as these where it would be better to keep a player from the server for some amount of time, but it isn't really fair to ban them premanently.

I think what might make things a bit less confusing would be to add another field to the ban dialogue. I would recommend having the options for the ban be the following:
Code:
/ban (Username) (Permaban - 0=No, 1=Yes) (ban length in minutes) (reason)
I think this would make things a bit clearer about whether or not the user is being permanently banned or not. If permaban=0, then the ban length would be taken into account. If permaban=1, then the ban length would be disregarded.

Maybe this isn't the best way to do it, but I think ban length is important enough that it should definitely be reconsidered. Sorry again for gravedigging this thread, but it's a legitimate issue that I think should be given a bit more thought.

Ive received multiple pms about how on the forums from users ive temp banned saying they've learned their lesson and when they come back their behavior has changed. The temp ban is a powerful rehabilitative tool that server admins should have access to.

Yes, I'll try to get to this soon. It's been on the edge of my todo list for a long time, but there's been so much other stuff to do.

Perhaps /ban [user] [optional length]

Where valid options are: hour, day, week, month, year, forever.

Making the default forever and making the options clear you take the best from both worlds. As a guide:

Hour:Unintentional Disruption of non-league game.
Day: Unintentional Disruption of league game.
Week: Excessive Profanity, Name Stealing
Month:Team Switching, Purposeful Bomb Wasting
Year: Excessive Immaturity
Forever: Intentional Disruption

Were you being immature 90 times?

I think that's a solid chart, Eso.
