I don't believe the current one is finished yet, unless the fact that TS forfeited due to a lack of players counted as a loss, in which case V is the winner of the inaugural Altitude League.

I think Chobo's computer died and that effectively canceled the tourney.

I'd be up for getting together for some games for the finals tho.

Anyway, we should do some organised 5v5. It is just so fun and, in my opinion, much more interesting than normal public TDB.
I dont say that it should necessarily be with locked teams or something (we're still only 3 or 4 in ACE anyway), but just 5v5 with voice chat and everything.

yeah some pseudo-scrims would be nice. maybe we can just set a time and divide up the teams when we get there. like do it the way you do in elementary school where you have captains and they pick team members back and forth.

me rike.
maybe have a specific gametime every week on a passworded server/servers?
no need to organize just the people who show up get to play.

yeah, I like the idea of pick-up altitude. Just set up a password server and have pick-up games at a certain time maybe once or twice a week.

I'd been thinking about a pick-up type server for a while. I'll see what I can do/think up for it (since Teamliquid Pony Pasture is still up and generally empty)

edit: Alright, I think I'm somewhat committed to that idea. What would you guys like to see out of a PUG server? What would make it easier for you to use? What would make you more likely to use it? Right now, the plan is to develop a quick IRC bot, throw him in a channel, and let people register for a pug through him. When we get enough people, the bot automatically reconfigures the server and restarts it (given that the last pug has finished). Then all the players get notified with the new password and mumble server to join up.

My issue with that atm:
- How do we get people in the irc channel? Obviously this will fail if we don't have 10 people around willing to play at any time of day. Perhaps we should reduce it to 4v4's for that reason?

Well, assuming there's enough people interested in getting pick-up games going, populating an IRC channel shouldn't be a problem - if you don't get enough people on IRC, that in itself is evidence that there really isn't enough demand to sustain it.

If the problem is advertising the channel, there's the forum and the wiki, but the best way to get the word out to everyone would be a message on the in-game startup noticeboard .. maybe lamster could hook that up for you.

As far as game size goes, as long as you're running a bot, you could configure it to allow games to start with fewer players if there aren't any more people signed up; all you'd need is a 'ready indicator' from each player. (e.g. if only six players are around and they all tell the bot they're ready, the game starts 3v3 - if you want to set up a bigger game, just have people wait to ready up until all participants have joined).

Other nice features:
- Map voting from participating players
- Include a vote for "Random Map"
- Allow multi-round games (with configurable # rounds for best of 3 / 5 etc)
- Round timer settings

It'd probably make sense to let only bot-admins change some of the settings, I guess, but having as many as possible be votable would be nice.

Why does it have to be a bot? Make a web form or something and Lam/Karl would probably link to it.

honestly, I don't see that working. not many people even have an IRC client these days. I think arranging game times in advance is more likely to meet with success.

game times like... 2pm EST on Sunday? ^_^

The problem with a web form in this area is that its much harder to tell when people are still around. Its doable, just harder, I think. I agree that irc is a bit of a problem area though, its just hard to find a whole lot of ways around that for me.

In any case, I'd really like to see a pug server come to fruition as its been in the back of my mind since I started playing. Whether or not it would be worth my time at this point is a different story (and something I'm still undecided on).

The basic problem I see with anything that isn't as 'immediate' as IRC is that anything arranged in advance is subject to people having other things come up, or forget about the game, etc. - on an IRC channel you can immediately see who's around and who's ready. Otherwise you either overbook the game (and potentially force extras to sit it out), or have only ten signed up and suffer the possibility of being a player short on game day. Also, you can potentially have games a LOT more frequently than just a scheduled once-a-week (in which only ten people would get to play). It's also a good place to decide teams and discuss strategies beforehand.

Another nice thing is it'd be a place for altitude folks to hang and chat, when not playing. Good for the community, I think, if it gets at all popular. Also, I don't think getting people on IRC should be such a big problem; there's a firefox IRC extension, Opera has it built in, plenty of free clients, and web-based irc for people who don't want to bother with all that.

2v2 would be interesting, but we'd need some new maps for that, I think. Most are too large.

tourney....need....now......

Chobo's computer is on IR for the time being, but I'm sure someone else could step up. (hell, I'll organize it if it comes down to it).

The wave of players who joined after the release are getting decent now and they all seem pretty into the idea of making teams for a tourney. A lot of them are already making clans.

Also, ZS needs to avenge our losses to fLb.

--------------

Also, i reverse my liking of pick-up altitude. It's stupid because every game of altitude is pick-up altitude. Join a server and get placed on a team. Sounds like a pick-up game to me.

then ur not a true veteran...

i remember i was invited to play 2's on grasslands back in the day with 3 players that were of eminent caliber. Most fun of my life

who manages the altitudegame.com website? because if the manager or someone can set up another website for a league.. like you can do registration automatically... have different leagues 2v2, 3v3, 5v5... i just want to talk to the manager and see if we can set it up

2v2 or 3v3 would be great if we had a Team Death Match mode, but bombing against 2 people seems pretty boring and very fast IMO.

Should I just whisk up some poor-mans TDM maps out of TBD? I'd imagine its already been done but I've never seen them before. The only necessary change is removing the bombs...

Actually that's stupid, just agree to not bomb each other's bases.

I still feel that TDM is a major game mode and should probably be implemented, along with some sort of KotH or CP mode, which I believe is in the works or has been talked about.
