Default ball_cavern

It's a new ball map from zeh Boko; ball_cavern!

Tell me what you think, I'm gonna test run this on [test] server (whenever it's up) and I'll even make a tbd version if it's popular enough and doesn't end at the bottom of the ratings like asteroids did

v1.0
Picture here (it doesn't show the white lines when playing it)

v1.1
Picture here (again, it doesn't show the white lines when playing it and I resized it quick quick with paint so it's kinda crappy)
Download link here

Update: new graphics and a new layout.

Wanted to pop in here to say good job for not being discouraged about the criticisms of ball_asteroids and to keep making better and better maps.

I like it, there's original graphics too (and they're not ugly) and the layout looks playable. Hopefully it turns out good.

edit: tbd_asteroids -> ball_asteroids. brainfart haha.

Ah well, gotta keep going right! I'll try and perfect this till it plays really good

Oh and it was ball_asteroids before people start to think I made the tbd_asteroids. Can't have that!

Ha maimer schooled me, the first thing I was gonna post was "This is better than asteroids."

But seriously it's good. Feels like a cross between Snow and Grotto.

Snow/Grotto isn't a bad combo.

I think people like maps either for its playability(1), diference(2) or graphics(3).

1 - Im not able to criticise the playability cause i dont play ball very much... all i can say is that it has the long shots so much people love and i especially hate
2 - It looks prety straight ahead to me - wich i dont think its bad, just not diferent.
3 - Colour excess is of course bad. But you went near monochromatic.
You should make the obstacles stand out from the rest. As you pointed, pillars may look confusing. IMO you definetely should change the outside colour.
You also chosen brown that is a colour people dont like very much.
I like the fact outerlimit is an elipse. Maybe u could put a small bump behind the goals so that if the ball went "glued" to the wall stopped there.

Yeah, the map does need some decorating and the background + pillars need to change, but I was going for playability first. I could've created a geom map, but that wouldn't attract people. So I'm going for playability first! After that I'll fix up the graphics etc.

Looking at the picture and basing this off of the size of the spawn markers, it seems like the map is too small. You could just scale it up so that it's the same exact layout but larger from one end to the other so that it matches other ball maps.

Also looks like it's too easy to get to defend from the spawn, which will result in long games.

Otherwise I like it so far.

It's 4200x1300, mayhem is 3584x1614,snow is 4400x1220 and cave is 3700x1280
I think it fits right in there with size.
I know it might be smaller around the endzone, but I think that's all playability.
And same for the spawn being close to the defence zone, why not test that out in some games.

Ok, then it's just the image failing me. No problem there.

As for the spawns, yeah that needs testing, but I was purely making some observations based on the image for now as I haven't tested it.

Haven't played it yet but it looks cool.. QUESTION: Is it possible to make a goal from the top path above the floating rocks? Base on that image, it looks like a top shot would be blocked by those obstacles.

We tested this yesterday and I have to say the map is indeed too small. It works great 3v3 or 4v4, but more players makes it really crowded.

The color is kind of ugly and it sort of just looks generic, but I'll need to give it a play.

Survey says: YES!

It's a fun, well-balanced map where it's hard to defend from spawn. Good work.

I'm not sure what there is to criticize. In my opinion, asteroids is one of the best ball maps on ladder right now. It has unique elements and approaches, and is what I would consider "non-standard" in that you can't just force push in that easily, you have to be creative.

I am just beginning to think that anything that is unique or requires non-standard gameplay is immediately frowned upon by many/most players, which is a shame. It's very discouraging to try and be creative with maps it seems, but keep it up!

I love asteroids and this looks like it has potential, I'm excited to see where it leads = ]
