Default Presenting: The Altitude Hall of Fame

We don't have a banner yet, so here is a picture of a porpoise!

Competitive Altitude as we know it began in the well-known teamliquid forums in early 2009. Since then, there have been dozens of teams and hundreds of players duking it out in the 2d sky to achieve one simple goal: to be the best. Many have tried and failed, but a select few elite have proved themselves to be the greatest players in Altitude history. This thread is to commemorate both those top-level players as well as invaluable community members without whom Altitude would not be the incredible game it is today.

Without further ado, I present to you your Hall of Famers!

- Red names indicate players voted in due to their playing ability.
- Blue names indicate players voted in due to their contributions to the community.
- Purple names indicate players voted in for both categories.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

BG1
  • Team history: fLb
  • Year inducted: 2009 (first ballot)
  • Primary plane: Biplane
  • Bio: Generally considered to be the first elite dedicated bomb runner, he was known for his ridiculous jukes en route to hitting the enemy base. His dazzling array of moves often left entire opposing teams in the dust wondering what just hit them while their base got nuked.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Chobopeon
  • Team history: N/A
  • Year inducted: 2009 (first ballot)
  • Bio: He initiated the first wave of teamliquid Altitude players and created the first official competitive Altitude league: the aptly titled teamliquid.net's Altitude League. He and tec27 co-casted the first matches of this league, which was the first of its kind and indirectly helped create fLb and ACE, the most well-known and established teams in the history of competitive Altitude.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

eth
  • Team history: fLb, ACE
  • Year inducted: 2009 (first ballot)
  • Primary plane: Loopy
  • Bio: Another player to have joined the game with the TL wave. He joined fLb for the TL league and became known for his superior loopy play, carrying fLb through the league and beyond. He was the first one to ever write a guide for Altitude and inspired the many guides to follow. He later also became proficient at the other planes. He was also the first player to achieve Ace rank 10.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

gameguard
  • Team history: fLb
  • Year inducted: 2009 (first ballot)
  • Primary plane: Miranda
  • Bio: Another TL user, and another player known for his excellent miranda play. He was considered to be one of the best TL players in Altitude (if not the very best) for the majority of 2009, mostly due to constant practice and honing his craft. He attained 1000 hours of play very quickly relative to his peers, and only Maimer had more hours played than him.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

King!
  • Team history: Vapor, fLb, [L*]
  • Year inducted: 2009 (first ballot)
  • Primary plane: Miranda
  • Bio: Far and away the best trickster user for pretty much all of 2009. Whenever he was on the opposing team, there was nowhere to hide from his insane cross-map snipes. His playstyle consisted mainly of staying back and destroying enemy planes from long range while minimizing deaths, and inspired many players that came after him to be yelled at for "whoring" for years after he stopped being active.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maimer
  • Team history: TS, ACE
  • Year inducted: 2009 (first ballot)
  • Primary plane: Explodet
  • Bio: Began playing near the end of 2008, but became really known in 2009, not only because he was a extremely strong player at several planes, he also created a lot of popular maps that are still in regular rotation today such as Core or Mayhem. It would be safe to say that he's the one who created a standard for the maps created later. He was also heavily involved with game balance and hosted the 2009 Summer League (also known as the first APL).

¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Pillars
  • Team history: TS
  • Year inducted: 2009 (first ballot)
  • Primary plane: Biplane
  • Bio: He played Brood War professionally a few years ago and actually was involved with Blizzard to balance SC2 for a while. He used this experience to help balance the game of Altitude, and was widely considered to be the best player of the game for a long stretch of 2009.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

tec27
  • Team history: N/A
  • Year inducted: 2009 (first ballot)
  • Bio: This TL user's contributions back in 2009 are still significant even today. He hosted a bunch of servers for a while (including the servers for APL), and is still hosting the official Altitude Mumble server. On top of that, he wrote the Altbouncer system, the rotaltitude lolmode, and a bunch of less known/successful other features, such as timeflies. He later helped in the creation of ladder.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

tyr
  • Team history: ACE
  • Year inducted: 2009 (first ballot)
  • Primary plane: Biplane
  • Bio: TL player who created the other big TL team (ACE) and was the tactical leader of the team. ACE became known for its very good teamwork due in large part to his leadership role. He himself is known for his strong recoilless and bomber play in the team, his rage bursts in voice chat, and later on in the Altitude community for his Altitude videos and casts, and his recoilless guide.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ZidaneTribal
  • Team history: ACE
  • Year inducted: 2009 (first ballot)
  • Primary plane: Multiplane
  • Bio: Yet another player who came with the TL wave in April 2009. After the TL league, he joined ACE and quickly became what was arguably the best multiplane player in the game, dominant with all of them, and even able to bomb-run extremely effectively. He was instrumental in making ACE one of the strongest teams in the game.

Thanks again to all the people who voted. Special shoutout to tyr, mikesol, nobodyhome, Smushface, and Zidane for helping me throw all this together and especially tyr for doing the vast majority of the work on the writeups.

I'll have the 2010 ballot up soon-ish.

Please let me know if I have any of the details wrong. Most specifically, the teams. Pretty sure I'm off on a lot of the people on here, especially since teams from 2008 don't have clan threads..

2008 was back when we yelled at karlam for changing altitude so that you could boost with the bomb.

Oh yea, you guys were totally right btw. I hope yall are gracious in victory.

ferret still remain imo in the top5 players of all time.
When ladder appeared he no longer played regularly so obviously he wasnt as good as he used to be.

No he is nowhere close. He was decent at a time when most people couldn't fly without crashing. By comparison to them people thought he was better then he was. And he has absolutely no team play mechanics hes just a killbot.

I don't think Kuja would deny that at all.

But that's a discussion for the 2010 ballot.

kuja, ferret can run. He refused to run alone with low probabilities. And of course being in pubs you wont get much team cooperation lol. I dont know how many times he juked and killed people waiting for a push and after like 3 minutes of it he just chucks the bomb like caped and raged at bad players.

Snow was the killbot heh.

Meh it wasn't really fair back then because most of the good people had been playing the old ugly Altitude for years. The old game had been around for like 5+? years before that and was played pretty regularly and had very similar mechanics to Altitude today.(Until some jerk let the domain the matchmaker server was on expire and didn't update the game to fix it).

Pillars and Blank would be my picks, since they are both insane at all video games they touch for any amount of time.

The teamliquid wave brought a lot of competitive players too.

Pillars and I played some private 1v1 deathmatch games back in the day. Some with chosen planes, some full random. They were close games. I'll leave it at that

Ya I mean - there weren't all that many people who were around in early 2009 to really give a fair vote to this. Keep that in mind

And for the record, although this may be unneccesarily specific, Mikesol in a Miranda on a TBD map was always quite formidable
