Redesign Main Menu.
You might want to redesign the main menus.
Its really hard for me to convince people to try the game when the first thing they see is a childish interface. The MIDI music doesnt help either (is it MIDI? it sounds like it...) |

I agree completely. If anyone has good ideas for improving / redesigning the main menu please post them.

This one should be given some more thought. That is the main reaction I get from people too, they think it is a kids game because of the menu.

Nice save The function is ok but the look is horrible. The functionality could definitely use a little touch-up, but the graphics, omg. I would like to see nice sleek, semi-transparent windows. Just something more serious, and expensive, looking would draw a lot more people in as well as make navigating the game more enjoyable. I want to be able to easily pull up the friends screen, chat box, etc. from in game with minimal effort - without blocking my entire screen twice. It seems like no one else is that concerned about the interface but remember it will be a part of the actual game play as well.

Thanks for the feedback. Redesigning the main menu is a top priority for us now, but we're having trouble finding an artist who specializes in this kind of work. If anyone has examples of really cool menus from other games, please post them here so that we can refer to them when we redesign our menu.

I never really noticed the menus as being either good or bad before, but now that it's been brought up, they are a bit .. "bubbly".
3D buttons, generally, are out. If you want "nice sleek, semi-transparent windows", Crysis [1] [2] is the best example of this I can think of. That being said, I don't think semi-transparent, fancy menus are the way to go. They are neat and all, and might get more people to try the game, but in the long run, I think they would be clunky and arduous. I think the easiest good solution would be something along the lines of pretty much all of valve's games: [1]. Team Fortress 2 seems to apply most nearly to altitude in the existence of different customizeable classes: [2] [3] [4]. Another thing that's been popular lately is the 2D slidy-box things: [Unreal 3]. Also, I remember Mirror's Edge being really stylish, game and menu alike. Alas, I can't find a decent screenshot: [2]. My current favorite menu is an indie game called Teeworlds [1]. The checkers in the background move diagonally, and everything seems really solid. I don't know whether it will get annoying in the long run, but as far as first impressions go, impressed I was. COD4 gets a mention as well. [1] I like the new backdrop much more than the 3d planes. woo! If there's one thing game devs take away from this post, I would like it to be this: if you do a menu redesign, please, please don't break the keyboard shortcuts. You can change them, just so long as they exist. Thanks. |

When in doubt, copy one that already exists!
I really like Half-life 2's menu. It's just plain floating text over a background. The beauty of this is it requires practically no graphical design. You'll probably need a box and scrollbar or something to display servers...but that's about it! And I think the TAB display of players is not bad, just use that basic design.
