New Rating System
Here an overview of the new rating / leveling system being coded now that I expect to have finished today.
20 levels for ball (negative levels allowed so technically there will be more than 20). Other modes will have less levels as reaching 20 is probably going to take way too long. The max level for other modes likely will be 15. The plan is the first person to reach maximum level wins the season, so you have to keep playing to win. Since this is a new rating system things are subject to change mid season to either help speed up level gain or reduce the level required to win. However, this season is somewhat experimental and the last season of 'beta'. For this season only, all modes will end whenever a someone reaches max level in ball. If someone happens to reach the expected max level for another mode, the season will not end. Instead the highest ranked player will win when a ball player hits lvl 20. Assuming this rating system sticks, seasons for ball, tbd, dm, etc will not end at the same time in the future. Imagine each level as an increase of about 150 ELO, although the formula for points earned per game will be changing. Aside from the initial boost near the start of the season, rating change per game will generally be a bit lower than last season. It will be extremely difficult or impossible to achieve much of a streak bonus after your win percentage starts dropping. It is focused now on only being a boost initially to help a player get rated correctly a bit quicker. You have both a level and a rating. The rating is primarily to indicate how close you are to moving up or down to the next level. When you change levels your rating resets to 150. When you reach a rating of 300, you level up. A rating of 0 causes you to drop down a level. It also is used for ranking players within the same level. The team balancer only considers your level and not your rating. Everyone does not start at the same level. The top 5% from last season start at level 11, next 60% starts at level 9, next 30% starts at level 7, and new accounts + the bottom 5% from last season are level 5. This is to keep the team balance from being completely random near the start of a season and to help prevent new and lower ranked players from being vastly overrated. This also provides some reward for finishing a season higher and may encourage players to continue trying to improve their ranking even if they know they no longer have any realistic chance to win. Players below level 8 are not permitted to use Randa or rev. Based on the spread of levels across this season this may need to be modified. Level 8 sounds like a good starting point though. This feels to me so much like the Hearthstone ranked system (before legendary).
Will acquiring points per game be determined by the level we are? |

did we ever have a thread to discuss a level limit on mirandas? are we allowed to discuss it here? where do we line up to start picketing?
also is the limiting of number of mirandas that can be on your team a feature that is still planned? also this idea still sucks |

Coding complete for the rating system upgrades, other than importing player starting ratings based on results from last season.

I do expect to tweak the formula for points won/lost after the season starts. This is just a quick fix to get it closer to what I want. Quote:
Any solution to limit the number or mirandas feels sloppy, so I am not planning to do anything yet. If teams of 3 or more randas continues to be common, expect to see something. The options likely would come down to 1) Limit of 2: if two higher rated players are already using randa, you can't. 2) No hard limit, but average rated players can't use randa if a high rated player is using randa. So.. 1) prevents team comp from getting stupid with 3+ randas 2) Gives priority to high rated players, but average rated players can use randa whenever no top rated randa is on the team. Multiple high rated players can use randa at the same time as they are not restricted at all. Again I'd much prefer to not put any restrictions but will if necessary.
