Well it depends, what kind of computer do you have? Please tell me the brand, not the color of your computer.

Well, it depends on what kind of game you like and what kind of computer you have and sometimes where you live.
Anyway what kind of game do you favor more than others? Sports, RPG, etc? |

I play xbox, but when I go on my computer, I like to play halo, its online too, call of duty is fine too, combat arms, warrock, and those are for first-person shooters, if you want rpg, then age of empires are great, starcraft, warcraft, and if you like dogfighting games then blazing angels would be good, but my best advice for you would be to go to best buy or future shop and take a look at what they have at the pc section or if you use mac go to staples and check out what they have.

Unless I'm mistaken, AOE is an RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game rather than an RPG (Role-Playing Game) such as Runescape. Definitely a good choice though.

You are indeed correct, any game where "drag mouse to select army" is an option. You my friend are playing an RTS.

??? Diablo 3 isn't out yet and probably won't be in at least a year. More likely two years. Unless you are meaning some other Diablo 3 other than Blizzard Entertainment's Diablo 3? |

Starcraft 2 is probably comming in 2010, Cataclysm as well I'd say, which means Diablo 3 won't be comming before 2011, or 2012 even.

Well you have to remember that Blizzard has different studios working on different projects so their time tables aren't correlated since there are different people entirely working on each project.

Yeah but you know Blizzard.
Warcraft 3 was supposed to be released in 2000, and it finally came in 2002. Everyone thought the beta of SC2 was comming this summer and it's still not out. |

Most recent games I've enjoyed of each genre:
Real Time Strategy: StarCraft (Hell ya.) RPG: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (5x the game with the right mods), Fallout III (1.5x as good with the right mods) 2D Action: Infantry (Only good multiplayer one I've played for any length of time besides Altitude.) Platformer: N FPS: Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike Source, Call of Duty IV, Half-life 2+episodes Turn-based Strategy: Civilization IV Puzzle: Portal Flash games: Monsters Den: Book of Dread (Turn-based combat RPG,) Amorphous+ (Skillfull 2d action,) Gemcraft: Chapter 0 (Tower defense with lots of extras.) Tons of other good games out there, obviously. I know StarCraft and Civ IV are mac-compatable. Call of Duty IV is a great FPS which is intel-mac compatable. Not sure about any others. |

I usually just play flash games on like Newgrounds or something. I saw other people playing Altitude and I said that looks fun. XD
As for other games...hm...Maybe Unreal Tournament? I remember a raging boy video. XD |

sry guys, but starcraft isn't the 'best' game, but i would admit that it is the best one out of diablo and warcraft but there are plenty of other games that are good for pc or mac, and massi, mac doesn't suck if you're thinking this way because they don't have much games but many people are buying mac and its getting popular so companies will have to configurate the games to mac standard, but for now just play altitude for mac, or as i said search future shop or best buy and I hope you find the game you want for your mac, good luck.

Well, that's your point of view.
The fact is, Starcraft IS the most balanced game EVER, and 12 years after it has been released, there are still professional tournaments, with prizes of over 50k USD, and tens of thousands of people watching live games everyday on TV/internet all over the world. This makes it the most popular game ever, the most competitive game ever, the best RTS ever, and as far as I'm concerned, the best game ever. Last edited by tyr; 10-01-2009 at 10:18 PM. |

The fact is, the only thing that isn't opinion is that Starcraft is the most competitively popular game. Now, you could say that other stuff like its the most competitive game ever - and hell, I wouldn't disagree with you - but that's opinion. As for 'the best RTS', you could say its the best RTS from a competitive standpoint perhaps. From the standpoint of actually being a game, there are many new RTS games done with excellent polish and flavour - Company of Heroes immediately comes to mind, as EA has pretty much butchered my favourite series, Command and Conquer. Sure, you won't see televised matches of Company of Heroes or big cash prizes, but that doesn't make them any less fun when you're playing them as a video game, which is what its supposed to be about. So, I think Starcraft is an amazing game - but so are a lot of other games. |

I for one don't get starcraft at all. I respect that it was a quality game at the time, and it's well balanced and competitive now, but it seems too hopelessly outdated to be that fun.
For a cutting-edge, fun RTS (that will also choke your computer) try Supreme Commander. For FPS, I found CSS, TF2, COD4, BF2 and 2142 all fun. And of course there's WoW, which I spent more than 1000 hours on. I don't really get the point of epics now that they are upping the level cap; I think it defeats the point of the end-game. So I quit back when BC came out. |

On a positive note, I really love Supreme Commander too, and its predecesor Total Annihalation. As for 'hopelessly outdated' SC is one of those games where the interface is just good enough that it doesn't feel hard to do things you do in most new games. As long as the interface isn't the outdated part, old games are only outdated in graphics - which is a pretty minor aspect. |

Well, indeed, you're right.
But what makes a game stand out of the others so he could be considered best game ever ? If we look to what has been cited in the thread, we can see Starcraft of course, Doom 2, Half Life, Mario 64, and we could probably easily add Ocarina of Time, FF7 (well, "what's the best Final Fantasy" is anoter debate ..), and probably many more I can't think of right now. Every person who likes video games has at least heard of these games, and many have played them. Those games are legendary and had that little thing who distinguished them from other good games (who is still playing Total Annihilation novadays ? It was considered Starcraft's "big rival" back in late 90s, and is indeed very good). If we compare them to some more recent good and popular games, such as CoD4, CnC3, Dawn of War 2 or GTA4, do you think those games will be remembered for being exceptionnal 5 or 10 years from now ? They're fun, visually great, with a good gameplay, and many more good stuff, but they bring nothing new. I think they won't be. |

I believe halo should be in the list of top games too, it was the best game for it's time, and now, still a great game. But i do agree, all those games have been heard by all pro gamers, also I believe age of empires should be on that list too, its one of the best RTS game. It's mostly a matter of opinion because people have different concepts for good games, I myself play FPS but all gamers need all the different genres of games. Also, all games are great games, in general,

I think I only have a problem with the wording 'the best game of all time' because it's such a heavy title that it could only really be relegated to personal opinion. |
