Downloadable game pricing
for people who've bought downloadable games off steam / xbla / random websites, could you talk a bit about your thought process regarding pricing? just like a list of games you've bought and why you bought them would be awesome. and also if you have any pricing-specific habits... like do you only buy games below a certain amount? do you avoid low-priced **** because it's almost all garbage? do you ever specifically wait for price cuts?
and since it's relevant here, what made you buy alt? or for demo guys, what's kept you from buying it? gogogogo help me learn about this! |

Well I first downloaded altitude when it was a suggested game on apple's website. I played the demo for about 100 hours before I decided to purchase the real game. At first I was unsure but then I really got into it.
$20 is prolly the cheapest game I've bought in a long time - and it's well worth the investment. I admit, I was worried at first about me not really using it - but I'm really glad I did. It's the only game I've really played significantly since the summer began. I've played things like mirror's edge, assassins creed, mario kart, etc - but none of them have the same qualities as this. There is always something else for me to improve on in this game. No matter how long I play I feel I will never truly master all of the planes. Heck I play miranda all the time and I still feel I'm learning at it even when people rank me as one of the best randas. I have yet to touch the real delicacies of many of the planes. |

I definitely agree that a whole "know what your missing" feeling is good for business. I think that having an occasional free weekend, like once every 1-2 months would really help put some of those people over the edge because they could actually try the full game and then have to deal with the feeling of having it taken away.

$50-60 games: AA titles. Generally things I have been following since before release. I expect at least 15 hours of singleplayer or 50 hours of multiplayer.
$20-30 games: AA titles or games that I try the demo and like. I expect at least 8-10 hours of singleplayer (including extras) or 20 hours of multiplayer. $5-10 games: Things I like the concept of, I don't expect a lot of gameplay hours. Impulse buys. |

I bought bookworm adventures ($20), which I don't think needs explaining. My longest word was 13 letters.
Edit: I'll explain anyway. Eso had it and it was AWESOME so I got my own copy. And that was on my old compy that died long ago, so now I'm thinking I should buy it again because thinking about it now makes me tingle with glee. Last edited by Vi*; 10-10-2009 at 04:02 AM. |

Altitude is probably the only game that I liked and didnt buy. To be fair I dont play/buy a ton of games.
Im mostly with Eso ~$40-$50 for the big titles. ~$20-30 for the lesser ones(or older big titles ive been waiting for sales on), and addons. ~$10 for old, or online/novelty games. |

I only ever buy games when they are at least a year old usually. I'm not prepared to pay the premium price for them and will gladly be a year behind all the other gamers. As a result I can get amazing games for really cheap.
Bought Bioshock from steam the other day for about £15. Was cheap enough and had heard awesome reviews about it. Will probably buy Crysis when I have enough time to play it next as its only about £12. Also bought the Orange Box a few months back from them, don't remember the exact price but it was a bargain for all its content. The most I would spend on a game would probably be around £25 - about what I spent on COD 4, just because I had played on it at a friends house and it was awesome. I don't specifically stay away from really low priced games. If they have decent reviews I'll buy them, but if the reviews are bad, then I'm happy moving on to look for better games. I think I eventually bought altitude as I had played such a large amount I felt that I wouldn't mind paying for more features for a game which had already given me a long life of playing it. |

I played Altitude as it was on Apples recommendations list, when I downloaded it was Free Weekend and I hated all the planes except for Bomber & Loopy.
I purchased it not long after as I felt I should support Nimbly for creating such a cracking little game. I’m still a big fan of Loopy & Bomber but started playing the others to challenge myself and realise that I’ve only experienced a fraction of Alty. I’ve also purchased hundreds of IPhone aps & shed loads of PS3 games |

Just to be clear, I'm serious. I haven't bought any other downloadable games besides Altitude and Strifeshadow, ever.
