Lets play ugly, buggy, classic old school biplanes!

This is mostly for old folks and nostalgia, if you haven't played the classic game than feel free to give a try but be warned its not pretty.(and it probably has a lot of bugs/crash conditions still there and there's a good chance it may not even run depending on your hardware, also windows only).

1. Download the zip archive here http://rs389.rapidshare.com/files/30...1/Biplanes.zip

2. Extract and then run using the run.bat file(this skips the attempts at updating that will fail if you try using Altitude.exe)

3. Hopefully it works and you can join servers using the manual IP entry at the bottom. I'm running a server of unknown quality at 206.123.89.147:27015 now.

We should probably pick a time to all play/get a decent game.

PS: there is a known bug where if you leave the server then rejoin the game will crash(and you may even have to kill the process to play again)

Slowest download EVER! 6 mins left arg, I can't believe I am about to play old Alt again! I get excited over seeing an old screenshot or vid, this is gonna be great! Thank you for posting this!

Isnt there like a terminal for mac? The only commands in the bat file is:

set CLASSPATH=Master.jar;Biplanes.jar;BiplanesMedia.ja r;jogl.jar;
jre\bin\java Game.GameMain

I can hear the game but the screen's grayed out. Windows 7, widescreen monitor.

You don't need any application, it's build into the OS. Just doubleclick it.

Btw, after playing a very small amount of 1v1...

- Holy **** I forgot how punishing the game is without afterburners. Get stalled within a few inches of the ground? DEAD.

- I miss the old zoom level

- I miss the anti-blank and ammo powerups

- we really need to get together a tbd game. maybe on saturday? how does 2pm ET sound?

- I figured it would feel stranger than it did, but new Alt has stayed remarkably true to the overall feel of the game with plane movement / speeds / etc. There are def some differences, but I figured I'd be all like, "holy **** this is crazy!"

actually what I'm most curious about is the impression of ppl who never played the old game.

The only two things I really reacted to was that stall is incredibly hard to recover from, and that collision detection is a bit shady.. you get stuck in the sides of walls quite often.

Other than that.. it was just hilarious and awesome. I love miranda being able to turn invisible/fly through rocks, I love the loopy secondary(and the graphics, lol), and bomber is just cool - not being able to shoot forwards was annoying at first but it kinda grew on me lol. Oh and I actually like playing without afterburners.. now I havent played like a full game, but it made my play a lot more deliberate than just zipping around all the time.

I also liked the open maps a lot.. I'm pretty sure it won't work in new altitude, but playing them on there was a lot of fun. Grasslands was great! :]

PS. The hell does that machinegun powerup do? When you use it it spawns like blue circles around you that move inwards/outwards, but I didn't notice any effects :P Oh I get it lol! Unlimited ammo? I feel stupid.

yeah i miss smart bombs too. i see how they were op and not too fun to play against, but they were sure as hell fun to use =(.

does anyone have the old map i made where you play under the sea? There was a landing strip on like a beach, and a transparent texture to make it look like you were under the water, i think there were about 4 caves you could fly around in. think you've got all my other maps, but i miss that one =(

This happens to me. Alt-tab between your desktop and the game a few times; in my case it'll load properly after a couple tries.
