Default Prestige System & Stats Screen

I've talked a bit with a few different people about this idea in the past but never wrote anything concrete about it so uh, here goes I guess. Right now we have the "issue" cropping up that levels are merely a function of time and it becomes increasingly difficult to determine a players skill based on the number next to his name. In addition, a number of players seem to be asking "What comes after 45?" in-game, since many players enjoy the feeling that they're working towards some kind of goal. Anyway, the prestige system from Call of Duty 4 has been brought up a bit and a few people seem opposed to some degree so I've sort of been brainstorming possible ideas.

Prestige System

Basically, the prestige system would be the portion of the game that is, to some degree "skill based". There would be no perk rewards for prestige levels, no new planes, nothing that directly affects gameplay. However, aesthetic changes and the levels 46-50 would be set aside for players who take an interest in completing some of the prestige challenges implemented with this system.

Essentially, prestige levels would be unlocked not through experience but by completing 'prestige challenges' which would unlock once you reach level 45. My vision of this is more or less having 25 unique challenges unlocked simultaneously which are all extremely difficult on some level. You can complete these challenges in any order, none of them should really depend on the other ones, and they should all ideally encompass every area of gameplay (nuke related, K/D ratio related, defense, dogfighting, etc). For every 5 prestige challenges completed, you gain a level and a corresponding aesthetic improvement. The aesthetic improvements could range from being a shiny new icon on the scoreboard to having your plane semi-glowy or having a new skin unlocked for your planes.

Some examples of achievements I have in mind are things like "30 kills in a row" and even more complicated challenges like "Reflect 5 nukes into the enemy base where the bomb is airborn for at least 8 seconds." Obviously this stuff could be brainstormed later but the basic theme is "highly difficult for even experienced players to pull off" so prestige ranks accurately reflect skill on some level.

Basically I feel like the system should be there for people who want to be more competitive about the game and as a means to say "Oh, this guy isn't just level 45; he can actually fly in straight lines and kill people too! And he's good at it!"

Stat Screen

I've felt like Altitude has needed a stats screen for some time now. Again, my vision of this is to have a column of lifetime record stats "Most Kills in a Row" "Largest Multikill" "Longest Time Alive" and a second column for the ever-changing stats such as cumulative kills/deaths, ratio, etc. Players from oldschool biplanes may remember that Argonide wrote a program to scan the combat log file and track a number of stats like these. It included a lot of fun stuff like "Killed most by [player] [number of deaths]" and "Killed most [player] [number of kills]". This little program was a ton of fun and I'd love to see something like it make a return. Also, ideally since Altitude makes use of accounts, this stuff could even be stored in a database and searchable online or ingame. Basically this is yet another route to fuel some competition/feeling of having real goals that will hopefully keep people interested for longer periods of time.

As far as modeling the scoreboard I think Team Fortress 2 does a wonderful job of this: TF2 Scoreboard.

I would love to see something similar to that.

Anyway, I post this not just to toss my ideas out but hopefully spark some similar discussion about things people want to see in terms of goals/statistics in-game.

I like the idea of the prestige though I think the actual challenges would have to be tweaked to be tough but realistic, and skill based instead of just time spent.

But the stats I think is a must. It should be an easy change to track some of these and the cumulative nature would be a nice way to try for goals (say a kill/death ratio over 3 to 1) as well as something to remember great experiences.

Kind of a cool take on the prestige system. I do think though that grinding levels, unfortunately, is just inherently more addictive and more likely to keep people playing. Still, personally I think something like this would be great.

Oh, and I'm sure Lam's aware of how nice a stats screen would be. Just takes time to implement.
