Default Ball Suggestion

So I have been working with ball maps quite a bit and I am liking the 45 degree angled spawning bunkers as a solution to the spawn issue for now. It allows the spawns to be removed from the playing area, which then allows for more of the map to be used during play.

However, one thing I do not like about adding in spawning bunkers it that it creates an issue when the ball is goes into it. If the opposing team accidently passes the ball and it goes into the spawning bunker of the other team, it becomes a problem. It basically stops the progress of the game as there is only one way out of the bunker.

My solution is to create a special version of the all power up. This has been mentioned before, but I think that it would add a lot to the game of ball. Basically, this wall power up would be used to cover the entrance of spawning areas. The wall would never go away, but it wouldn't act like a normal wall power up in that it wouldn't cause the opposing team to be EMPed. The wall would merely act like a normal wall, except that one team would be able to pass through this wall, while the other team would crash into it. The ball would also bounce off this wall.

The only issue I could think of by including this option in the editor would be if a team brought the ball back into their spawning area. It would effectively be cut off from the map and the other team would never be able to get to it. So there would have to be a mechanism where if an opposing team tried to pass through the wall while carrying the ball that it would cause the ball to automatically eject (kind of like when you enter the goal with the ball), which would then cause the ball to bounce off the wall. Either that or make it so if you are carrying the ball that you cannot pass through the wall back into the spawning bunker OR make it so that once you pass through the wall after spawning that you cannot go back through it (so basically it becomes a normal wall to a player after they pass through it once).

Here is an image of what I am imagining:

Great idea, but the wall doesnt need to be team specific.
Just make it a one-way, so u can fly/pass and maybe shoot(?) through it from one side and crash against it from the other.

And yeah, i totally wanna see ball_crazyLabyrinth with A LOT of one ways

I can see that being used in other maps for spawn and other purposes! Like a safe zone, or the pitstop in my race suggestion...
Would be great if it fit (fill) all gaps!

Good idea.

I wonder if the following possible from a programming perspective?

A wall that only blocks balls or planes that are carrying balls.

That way balls can't be shot or carried into the bunkers.

Everything is possible from a programming perspective.

As for the suggestion, it's decent I guess. The problem might be that it would be too easy to defend (see: Mayhem and Mayhem2). Those maps go on for a long, long time between evenly matched teams. Obviously, there's other reasons for that, but the spawn does allow you to get back to the goal faster than say, Core, Snow, etc.

I like the thought. It's not like the spawns should ever be in play (then again, maybe they should, to punish poor teams ).

This would be great for volleyball, though.

Instead of the complex wall idea in the first post a one-sided wall would probably work a lot better. You can get out, but not back in to the spawn. These could also be used for other parts of the map for interesting tactical areas.

Could also keep people from spamming up the spawns with mines and acid.

I like your idea.

I don't like it. One problem is that the ball would bounce of the wall for the enemy, so they would use it as a bounce shot (e.g. in core). It would alter the dynamic of the map - not always a bad thing, of course. Second, it's not just core_rev and mayhem_rev we're talking about here... snow has this problem, as does football (not a good example, I know), as well as planepark. When the ball is thrown into the enemy spawn by the enemy team, they lose it for a bit, both teams waste time getting it out of there, etc., but I don't see it as a real problem since it happens infrequently and doesn't really benefit either team.

Is it annoying? Yeah. I appreciate you're trying to solve the problem, Maimer, but I don't know that it needs to be solved.

I like the idea, but I don't think it should be ball-specific. It'd just be an interesting new tool for mapmakers to use however they want. I'm sure there will be maps that use it well and maps that use it poorly and maps that don't use it at all, and that's all for the best imo.
