Default ping is too high!

i hosted a server and had several people playing in it. their pings were all ranging from 600-999 and anyone playing in my server had extremely high ping. is that because of my server or because of them? and if it is my server, what can i do to fix this?

Was this the volleyball server?
If yes, people will download the maps from your connection, which will take almost all of your upload.
This results in 600+ pings for everyone.

286 kilobit or kilobyte?

If someone downloads a map, their client tries to download these files with there maximum speed.
For me that would be 256 kilobyte per second, or 2Mbit.

Using official maps would be the first.

-.- Let me rephrase my question. Do i have any options of optimizing and increasing the quality of my home server, concerning the extremely high ping?

The response to use official maps was because then no one is downloading maps off your server. You made it sound like you were hosting custom maps and therefore people were downloading from your server. If this is truly the case, then those people downloading are sucking up a lot of the bandwidth. If it isn't the case, then there isn't much that can be done. Home connections aren't designed to be used as web servers.

The lag spikes are really annoying, can't the developers decrease the update intervals on ping?
