Can't change name.

Hey i recently purchased the game through steam as a gift for my brother ($2sale). After we get it up and running when we try to change the default user name it hangs on "connecting to account server" when we click update account. Other than that everything works fine, just can't change user name.

My issue is slightly similar and I'm wondering if it also falls under the realm of being covered by the patch, but I bought the game through steam but am not able to play with a nickname, when I attempt to enter one it just says connecting for a long time but never accepts it, so for now I'm a guest of some sort?
