Default Ball map concept

nobo's thread about ladder spurred me to make this lolmap.

I tried to incorporate the things I like most about other maps. Long shots, bounces, passing lanes, good clearing paths, etc.

I highlighted potential "difficult" shots by drawing them in red (duh).

Obviously it is a very rough conceptualization; I am no artist.

Any comments? Do you think this would make a nice map?

Nice idea! I'd like to see if this works.. I think it might be a bit crowded/dense, it kinda messes up the gameplay (I made the same mistake in asteroids )

And there was some theory going about the spawns, if you're gonna make this map this might be of great help:

Reminds me of atmosphere. Hard to say, but I think it's workable.

i do kinda like this rough sketch of course it has a long way to go but i think as long as its not to crowded in the mid (cause it looks like it would be from that sketch) it could be a great map.

I like the idea and it might work.
I doubt people could actually make shots by bouncing them off an object in an actual game on purpose. Of course you'd get those few lucky shots everynow and then though. I'd like to play it soon

The map starts with good ideas and the shape of the obstacles would be original.
I'm wondering if the spawns aren't too far away from each other. Spawing in a corner may render an attack support difficult, making it long to get to the opposite goal.

I do this actually a lot more than you think, sometimes I go into one of my servers that is empty and just try out trick shots and I have made quite a few of them in a real game.

I feel really weird just taking this map from you and making it but i am finished. I hope you don't mind that I tried making it. It can be played on Nikon's 6v6 ball server.

Nikon, I was thinking you might want to fill in the areas right above the goal, as the ball (and planes) can easily get stuck there.

This shows the area I would want filled in, though the shape of that area could be anything, really.

It would be difficult/a pain in the ***/take a long time to fix it like that, so i just moved the goal out a bit and put some health behind the goal.

right, so i just fooled around on it with goose for like 15 minutes. had some ideas if you're willing

(these correspond to what is labeled on the attachment durr)

0) ball_hardcourt would be a much more pimp name than ball_woody

1) shave off a little bit from each of these points...like .5-1 lengths of the ball. it will allow for a midcourt shot (lolwat) and a sweet bounce shot.

2) make these symmetrical if you want lol

3) these were intended to help the offense but as it stand you can't bounce at the goal off of them. the newly drawn ones should allow for bounces. also, slide them a little towards the middle of the map.

4) right where these start, if you hit the very beginning of them, the ball bounces in a crazy direction. is there a way to smooth out the ends so the ball doesn't bounce backwards

5) goal area is wayyyy too crowded. this is a useless structure and you should have slapped me in the face for even having it on my drawing.

6) move these down and to the right just a lil bit. once again, to uncrowd the goal a little bit. also to allow for bounce shots with the modified goal location you did. keep the angle the same.

7) the biggest change...these diamonds proved to be WAY too large, and the rest of the bottom middle WAY too empty. So, delete the diamonds, and replace them with those 4 straight lines. this will make two little "tunnels" of sorts for time anchors to play with.

8) i didn't label it, but the two squares below the goals are really close to the wall and difficult to fly by. they don't really serve a purpose so i guess they could be deleted?

I will try to make most of these changes, see I thought most of this but I didn't want to change it because you had all of the trick shots planned out already.

playing this on arr3 just now, it appears that the damage modifier on the entire ceiling is zero

i assume that's an error

Hey, I was hoping someone could do me a huge favor.

I don't know anything about making maps. At all.

I also can't figure out how to upload maps. At all.

If someone could go to {arr} 3, download ball_hardcourt, and upload it here, I would love you.

If you could also make the ceiling have a normal damage modifier, and (this is weird without a picture), on the bottom-most left and right triangles, instead of having them angled down, rotate them so they are flat, that would be epic.

(if nikon wants to do these things <3 but anyone feel free to take a crack at it)

Gemi already did that for all maps on arr#3.

Here's the link

About the map, I've played it and I think is one of the maps on arr #3 that is ready to be official and/or in ladder.

I've had one or two people say the map is too bright?

I personally don't think so, does anyone else have this issue?

Check it out on the dojo servers and {arr} 3.

It's a fast, fun map that caters to various plane types.

It's a bit on the bright side but not disturbingly so.

It seems nice to me, the floor looks like wood in a bowling lane or something of the sorts. I think it's nice and if it got darker it wouldn't look so good, it would start to look like old wood (like what happened with the ball_sketchpad map, which had a nice background and now it looks nothing like cardboard).

I can't fix the bottom triangle thingies, they're all stuck together in one layer. Nikon will have to fix that when he gets back.

I did, however, manage to make the ceiling hurt people. Yeah.

Download hurr.

Thoughts on the map (without significant competitive play):

Many of the users appreciated the simplicity of the map and how fast and smooth games seemed to go. On the other hand many users thought it was boring because there was nothing really unique about the map. They didn't really know what to change about it but it played well regardless.

Some users suggested that the top middle part of the map was too open. Other users said the corridors were too flat and should be curved more. Other people suggested a little bit more space behind the goal.

Unfortunately there were not a tremendous number of good ballers. I'll post more reviews when we get legit players to review the map.

do what you want, you did the heavy lifting lol

you could go all narcissist on the map and put our names in giant block letters

people would love that

alternately, maybe fancy up the colors of the objects a bit? the floor is really cool looking i think, but maybe it'd look fancier with different colors/borders on the polygons?

idk

I experimented but it didn't look as good as this does, If people think it's really boring I could try to spice it up a bit but I think it's ok.
