I started playing altitude in january 2010, so i'm fairly new, but i didnt notice altitude is dying. But maybe thats because I don't know how it used to be..

So come on granpaws and maws of altitude and tell me a story (or two) about altitudes history, about how it all was way better back in the days etc.. and put some sentiment and melancholy in it!

ps. I'm new to the forums, so nice to meet you guys.

Look man, I am not even that old. I have been playing longer than most of the current players but there are still guys that have many many hours over me.

I remember when every team showed up to APL matches and how all of their member were active.

I also remember the fLb vs ACE final match. It was on middleground.

I say, In all speak:

"WOW. Is this the for real final match?"

I was kicked from the server and it was full to get back in.

People took it very seriously, but ACE raped em all anyways.

Planeball didn't exist.
Bouncy walls didn't exist.

The only mode we could play as a team was TBD. On normal wall servers.
So everyone was playing on Official 1 and a couple other servers (The Teamliquid Pony Pasture for instance, when we started) and it was pure awesomeness.

When I started (April 2009 IIRC) there was only FFA and TBD, there were only half a dozen servers and there were... 5 maps maybe. I'm pretty sure Core didn't exist yet or it had just been created because I remember the hype when people started playing in it. Almost every current top player was a free agent or just had the TL tag before the summer league.

Also, let's not forget the Bloomoon servers which had 14v14 chaotic games, but the maps were relatively fun. Wuwu, me, Chief (who doesn't play anymore) and others had lots of fun getting monster ratios in those.

And the game was still free when I started playing of course... then I stayed a demo loopy for about 6 months (LOL)

so true DMCM))

Reeslo's fun servers really made my days back in may-july 2009 )

imo - the biggest difference altitude presents now, is that the "older" players are used to play with their mates, who're gone - thus comes a feeling the game's dying. Altitude's always been about its community - Community's changing, the game itself lives quite alright.

Aww yeah! bloomoon was awesomeness! I remember my buddies were wuwu who at the time was by far the best player i knew, Reeslo, Mr. 1-2, wolf'jmax, chief, Omnicron (hangs head in shame). I remember when we first found out how to vote kick, lol, and yeah!!! Jeppew's koopa map made for some of the best 2 hour matches ever! What was the name of the really long map and the bases wee in like an alcove, ummm idk.

L0ve Alty!!

My only criticism of the Devs was the introdution of bouncy walls, what a waste of time and a green perk, we have rubber hull for those who like to flop on the ground like a wet fish!

Oh yeah, back in the days you actually had to type the reason why you were voting to kick a person

/vote kick (user) (reason)

which explains why we still have the habit of writing "reason: ____" before we vote.

Bluemoon servers are the reason bouncy walls started. They should burn in hell Also Core was a map already when i started playing (march 2009) it just had lacking graphics.

One of the first, possibly first altitude vod http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHd8rrj19PQ played on old core, oh also there was still no tournament mode back then

"It's a very weird choice to use miranda to run bomb" lol

There was a huge influx of teams during that time mainly cause the game was still in beta so completely free and TL brought on a lot of players.

wow no bouncy walls? So beginners learned to fly the tough way?

They should limit the use of bouncy walls to beginner servers (where only level 1-59 is allowed) imo.

Like the enthousiastic responses so far, and especially the old video's.. the graphics and sounds are actually improved imo

Keep the stories coming..

The normal way, if you ask me.
You crash a lot at first but then you get used to it so it's okay.
We even had a team called "Into The Walls". It was pretty awesome.
Also, rewatching that video reminds me that it was still the old thermo where it made you stall and not turn. God that was annoying.
And smart bombs. hahaha

I started playing about a year ago, as a demo loopy. I had discovered the game on the Apple Top Downloads List. I really liked the game, so two months later, I bought it. Things I remember:
-Took me a real long while to discover how plane classes worked. I usually clicked on the random setup button.
-I remember, and I miss the old altitude theme song I remember listening to the saxophone solo while chatting with some friends...
-I also remember the old main menu theme, with the red boxes It looked a bit less classier than the current one, but I loved it.
-I remember playing with classicallad before he created KLF. Never talked to him though. I also recall DMCM playing demo loopy as "Modest Mouse", saying "I'm not going to buy the game, I only use loopy anyway"
-I remember great maps which don't exist anymore
-The average level of skill was higher, bouncy walls didn't exist.
-Haha! Now that you mentionned it DMCM, I remember some hilarious "reasons" people applied to kicks I didn't know how to kick back then...
-OLD SOUNDS <3 I was shocked when I updated to the new sounds thing.
................
God, I miss all that. Although I see a lot of activity going on nowadays, theres much more spam on Altitude imo. If you thermoed a loopy back then, there was no chance for it to shoot you as it was losing energy on the ground...Ball mode is very interesting and requires teamwork, but it is much, much easier to play than Tbd. Tbd made your skills stronger.
Honestly, I don't know if Altitude is really dying or not. I guess time will tell.

Hahah yeah.

Turns out I really didn't buy the game.
Bong bought it for me <3
But I would've gotten altitude for christmas that year anyway.

Man, I was so wrong. Now I'm a bomber primary and I learned biplane and explodet in the meantime. Aaaand I hate 90% of loopies in alti now. That shows how much can change in a year.

Lol, before Ace Ranks came I was only playing Recoilless Bip', my first and truer love, but thanks to Ace Ranks I actually tried the other perks and planes out, and now I play a larger variety of setups.
I also really liked the Loopy at first, but now, I look at it with shame

Ah, billions of demo loopies, I remember that with great fondness... probably because the modern counterpart is dumb-bomb bomber, which I despise with a passion. Most talentless kill-stealer in the game... but anyway...

I remember bloomoon too, I loved the level with an absurd amount of missile powerups. I remember all the old clans, and the one I was in with Wolf and Step and Class before it kinda died.

I remember when core was massively overplayed, kinda like asteroids is becoming nowadays. But it's better than having hour-long campfests on some of the newer maps, if you ask me.

Also started probably around a year ago, and others have described most of it.

- Only FFA and TBD game modes. 1DM was sort of a test mode known as OBJ, and when all the new game modes were invented it was sort of crazy going to servers for a while. Ball was definitely the one that caught on the most, though 1DM is my favorite. <3

- Old UI wasn't this futuristic black transparent stuff, but a cheerful (though less professional) red. Really miss that.

- Not nearly as many clans as there are now. I remember joining and seeing tons of people with the [TL] tag, but had no idea what it meant. Later I learned I had arrived a month or two after the influx of Team Liquid people.

- No demo limit. People could play the demo (with only loopy and bomber) as long as they wanted before they decided to buy the game.

- I thought the only good planes in the game were loopy and bomber, so after I bought it I still only played those. Explodet seemed like a big joke, and Miranda seemed to complicated for me to ever learn. Of course now I pretty much only play randa. D:

- Old sound effects, though I never really had sound on much anyway. A lot of people miss these since the devs hired a company to recreate all the sound. The only thing I really miss is Vi's old intro saxaphone music.

- No skins, community points, ace ranks, etc.

- I didn't know there was a console, so whenever people voted to kick me or change the map I'd be so confused!

- My favorite and most active servers back then were the BlueMoon servers (Community Maps - Favorites had a ton of gems such as tbd_boucehouses and tbd_mummy'scurse), Competitive Edge (a TBD server with a 15 minute time limit, there were always some really good games played there), and FFA 24/7. This was back when FFA was actually taken seriously as a game mode.

- Periodically players like Spade and Snowsickle would log into my server and show me just how bad at the game I actually was.

- Reasons for vote kicks meant that you'd get kicked for a server for "hacking" if you were doing well or "being a noob" if you were doing poorly.

Then there were the old school players (most of them now inactive), that played since the beta or since the initial game was first released a bunch of years ago. Fun times, and the only thing I still really resent is the addition of bouncy walls. Learning to fly the hard way just generally makes for a higher skilled group of players.

Welcome to the forum!

Haha yeah that intro was great...I have a version of it on my iPod that I found somewhere here on the forums. Does anyone have an MP3 of the current theme song? Also it would be nice if the game allowed us to switch back to the old theme song

This says it all.

If you look at the BALL roll-call thread, there are something like a dozen new clans sprouting up. Granted they may not all last, but that is still over a hundred (mostly) new players interested in some form of competitive matches.

You can argue that BALL is a weak mode or that the new players aren't skilled or a number of other things, but to say it's dying is subjective.

Tosconi holds a good point there. And the numbers of players have increased since Bouncy, and Ball, have been implemented. Karl and Lam don't care about which players left as long as there are more to replace them. They have been successful too, there have been more players on Altitude than for a long time! The players need something to hold their attention and addiction, introducing Ball and Bouncy has done that. Because Ball and Bouncy help players get more XP, the easy way. And that's what people want, that's why they play it.

I remember way back when I started playing we had piercing lasers, smart bombs, piercing HC rounds. Not balanced, sure, but it was a lot of fun. I was relatively unknown then and sucked with every plane until I unlocked the trickster. Today, I still suck with every plane that's not Miranda. >_>

HC still pierces, just not as well as it used to.

The thing I remember most fondly about pre-steam alti was the old vets everywhere. There wasn't really any place you could go to play with a bunch of nubs, there was always some vet hanging around pwning ppl, so you had to become fairly proficient fairly quickly in order to survive. This is how we ended up with some great post-beta-pre-steam players like mat, Tex, Monxy, Mana, Mike, DMCM, etc. etc. etc.

I thought Monxy was a beta player. And I know HC still pierces, I just meant back in the "fire shot, get megakill" days.

Spade was a relatively good biplane player who used to play, but I think he quit now. Most people might not remember him since I think he pretty much only played FFA! But yah, him, Snow, Blank, and Caped among others used to come into the servers where I was playing when I first started and make me go cry in a corner about my lack of skill :\

I joined in the Mac top 10 Download list era sometime in May I think, last year.

I remember...
  • When Monxy was but a wee demo loopy owning everyone.
  • Those old sounds and screen. (Way better than this imo)
  • When I was on [BOSS] (Yay Combat!)
  • [fLb$]
  • The demo days...
  • Vote kick reasons. (Those were the best)
  • Trying to figure out what a captains game was.
  • When TBD and FFA were the only modes.
  • When this guy called 'Maimer' kicked me with his admin powers from the ACE vs fLb finals match because it was full, then not being able to get back in.
  • When people showed up to matches.
  • My personal favorite... When we had unlimited name changes anytime, anywhere.
