Steam version and paypal purchase

So I played Altitude in the free weekend on steam, loved it etc and so did one of my friends, so we decided we wanted to gift it to each other using the paypal link(I also think it deserves atleast 10$ rather than 5£ which steam even takes some credits off).

So I bought it yesterday using the paypal link, and didnt know that there was a difference between the steam and regular client, and noticed that there were no "upgrade to full account" in the steam version, so I downloaded the regular game client and found out I couldnt connect to the steam version account (or atleast that's what it looks like to me)

So my problem now is that I have a registration code, and want to use the steam version account which is level 58, instead of starting from scratch but don't know how this is possible, or if it is possible at all.
