Default Scanned images

I have a feeling the answer is no, but is it possible to make the background of a stage a picture that has been scanned?

you can make it be any image in pretty much any standard image format. so yeah, no reason it couldn't be something you scanned.

I'm not sure if this is the problem, but the other files for the maps in the map editor have .png files, but the thing i scanned is a jpeg file.

I am fairly certain you can use a jpeg file. What you want to do is create a new map in the editor. That will create a folder inside the Altitude/Editor/Maps directory. Inside your new maps folder will be a folder named "images." Place the image you want to use inside that folder. Then inside the editor go to "Edit" and then "Refresh Resources." Now you should be able to place it on the map using either the "Create Geom" or "Place Sprite" option.
