Default Duel maps

I remember hearing some people who wanted duel servers, and I'm well up for hosting (2.5 mb/s up), but I think some specific duel servers would be good. Figure two spawns (duh), limited engagement areas, and probably few/no powerups.

There were duel maps in the old altitude. just saying. But still, we just dueled on the standard maps like cave, city. Mostly cave.

Actually I think you would want more than 2 spawns, that way people couldn't spawn camp.

Well then, guess it's default maps unless I get any kind of clamor for new ones.

3 duel servers up, though probably not 100% uptime.

Soon, though.

Two spawns would work in duel mode: after each kill both players respawn and if 3+ players are on the server the loser cycles out.

I toyed around with making a TBD map specifically for 1v1. I stopped though because it would have to be hosted on a 1v1 server, wouldn't work with multiple players.

If you'd like, you could finish it and I'll host. I got no problems.

At least a few people are using the duel servers, which is cool. Seems that the dedicated tbd_dodgeball has turned into exp-whoring though.

So I had this random piece of photoshop layout sitting around and I thought, Grif is looking for a duel map, so I just modified it a little and threw some basic textures on it. It's a relatively small map, so it might suit the 1v1 well. However, I realized that I have never played a duel in the game so I have no idea what will work and what won't. I think that after talking to Pillars we both decided that an over abundance of power ups can create a bad environment for a duel. So I threw in two power ups and made their spawn times 45 seconds (normal tbd and ffa games they are 20 seconds). I also have no idea what you set your game timer on in a duel. I think initially it might be easiest to know how long you plan on making the rounds and then just deciding how many powerups would spawn in the given game time. Something like 5 minute rounds, 10 power up spawns, therefore one powerup every 30 seconds. Again, I am really just speculating on this whole thing.

Let me know if you end up using it and how it ends up working out. I really just spent like 30 minutes making this map in order to give you a "test case" to see if this catches on. If people really enjoy 1v1 then I can put some more effort into making an actual quality map not only graphic wise but also with more thought put into the layout. Also, feel free to do whatever you want with this map. If you want to open it up in the editor and change the layout or adjust the spawn points or powerup spawns you are more than welcome.

I just looked and the picture makes it look a lot worse than it already is. So try not to judge it until you load it up.

Maimer,

Play a duel as soon as you can. I haven't dueled on the new Altitude either, but on the old one it was a lot of fun. I remember dueling my friend like 6 times in one night in a grand tournament for just us two. We forgot to keep track of who won

Also, duels usually aren't played on a time basis, they are played to 10 kills, 15 kills, etc.

Alright, threw it into the rotation alongside the other maps.

With regard to items, I think it might be interesting/good for duel maps to focus on having specific items spawn in specific spots (lending to things such somewhat akin to armor control in quake). Just a thought.

Thanks for making these servers, Grif! Dueling is fun!

Variants for dueling with newbs:

-secondary fire as only attack
-powerups as only attack
-miranda dash as only attack
-follow them closely, no attack allowed
-all attacks allowed, but no left turns

Other ideas?

Yeah I've done that a lot with loopy EMP and acid. It's pretty fun actually. Someone told me acid damage doesn't stack which I think is a shame. I think it should. i.e. fly through two different acid clouds and take 2x the damage. It should probably be limited to 2x though.

Probably better to do something along the lines of 1/n. E.g.:

1 cloud: 10 damage
2 clouds: 15 damage
3 clouds: 18.3 damage
4 clouds: 20.8 damage, etc.

Your duel server doesn't allow voting. I don't know if this is by design or not, but I think you should definitely allow voting.

I've actually used both of these and easily won.

Well, it won't help against super-noobs, but they're still good for those level 30s who are pretty decent at not crashing. Try no left turns though, you'll have a love-hate relationship with it (especially fun in left-turning tunnels).

Does anyone still have a copy of nesnl's dueling map? The mediafire link is dead.

Works fine as far as I can tell. If you still can't get it to work just Private Message me an email address and I will email it to you.

Default New Duels server

Vi and I put up a new duel server. It has nesnl's arena map (great map!), and a small version of the standard cave map that we just made (back when I thought the arena map was lost). Both maps are available in both FFA and Objective Deathmatch modes. If you don't like a map or mode, just vote to change.

We set a password that should keep the player set interesting. While you wait, you can play a bot set on Expert.

If there's interest, we can add more duel servers and/or add more maps.

Duels are awesome!

Also, you can join and just watch the two expert bots duke it out. The red one is named Rapunzel and the blue one is Marvin.

if you go into the server by yourself, and join while the two computers are fighting in an obj map, you will stay red, and so will the bot, causing you to keep winning the round due to the fact you arnt playing against anyone

i know...its just that it causes me to lose a round...and just seems a little buggy that a team can have no players
