Default Food Suggestions?

Hey all -

So completely unrelated to anything going on but I was curious as to if anyone has some good suggestions for pieces of food to cook (for those of you who cook your own meals).

I'll throw out one of my favorite easy dishes that sounds strange but I assure you is very good.

* Buy some thick spaghetti noodles and cook until al dente.
* Get a bowl and put some a bit of soy sauce at the bottom.
* Add a spoonful of peanut butter
* Add a small small small amount of sriracha (a chinese spicy sauce)
* Mix for a few minutes.

Delish!

Any other thoughts on some good food that's quick and easy?

That sounds pretty close to dan dan mein (the wikipedia article doesn't mention that peanut sauce is often used).

Banana Sandwich:

Take two slices of bread and smother these slices with peanut butter then take a banana and chop the banana in small circles, and lay the circles across the sandwich..

Now that's one of my favorite snacks!

I'll post more later.

The Best way to make a burger :

Get out a medium-sized frying pan, drizzle some olive oil on the bottom, and turn your stove up about halfway

Take a quarter pound or so of meat in your hands and roll it into a ball

Put the ball on the hot pan and let one area of it brown. Salt and pepper the exposed end

Turn the ball over so that the browned end is now up, and quickly squish the ball flat on the pan, making it nice and thin. You want to squish the ball flat immediately after you turn it over so that the rest of the meat doesn't cook until it's flat on the pan.

Season the other side of the patty and flip until it's nice and brown on both sides. Note that once the patty has been flattened it will cook pretty quickly, so if you're used to making thicker burgers, you're gonna need to watch this guy more closely.

Now, I know the temptation for some of you is to flip the burger out of the pan and immediately soak all of the juice off of the top. DO NOT DO THAT. Your burger will dry out and get all nasty, even on the inside. Let is rest for a bit, then LIGHTY run a paper towel or napkin across the top. You want to sop up the major grease puddles, not dry the thing off.

Put it on a bun and ur done!

the real best snack in the world is as follows:
1.) get out ritz crackers, jif peanut butter (creamy), nesquick chocolate powder for making chocolate milk
2.) obviously, put peanut butter on crackers and make the chocolate milk.
3.) never eat any other snack again

For those of you who are sick of boring snacks, try the following:

Pull out 3 slices of bread, some ketchup, tomatos, onions, greenbeans, strawberries, lemons, sliced apples, soy milk, some paper, some fried chicken nuggets, BBQ sauce, some peanut butter, and some mouthwash or a 9MM handgun.

1. Lay out one piece of bread and spread the peanut butter on the bread.
2. Add some onions, greenbeans, and chicken to your sandwich.
3. Apply the second layer of bread.
4. On top of this layer, spread the BBQ sauce out like you did the peanut butter and apply fruit to the top.
5. Drizzle the fruit in ketchup and add the final slice of bread as a topping. If you're observant, you'll notice that your sandwhich is too large to eat unless you have no jaw. In that case, I hope you enjoy your sammich and then see a doctor about that jaw thing. Everyone else, keep reading.
6. Stuff your sandwich into an industrial grade blender. Now this may be tricky to do without dismembering your sammich, so I recommend a hammer to jam it in there.
7. Pour the milk into the blender if you can. If not, just pour it onto your sandwich.
8. Start the blender for 2 (EDIT: It may take as long as 5) minutes. Use the paper to make an airplane to amuse yourself while you wait.
9. Pour your "smoothie" into a cup and drink it. At this point you can either use the mouthwash or the 9MM on yourself depending on how violated your mouth feels right now.

ENJOY!

I actually can cook, so this scares me a bit:

Then again, in college, a co-worker brought in meatballs made according to his grandmother's recipe. Said they were made with grape jelly, yellow mustard, and ketchup. I was like, no way are those gonna be any good. But I was wrong. Way wrong.

Something like this if you're interested in the recipe: http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,181,1...255192,00.html.

I cook every meal which is why I made this thread. I was actually taught about these peanut noodles from one of my Chinese friends.

Another great snack that's kind of weird: cut up some peppers, onions and potatoes into small pieces (potatoes very small). Cover them all with olive oil and place them on a baking sheet. Get some hidden valley ranch mixture (it's a powder) and sprinkle that over them. Cook in the oven at 425 and cook for about 20 minutes (varying on how big you cut them)

Here is my go-to recipe for a "cooking dinner together" date. It takes some time but doesn't require too much waiting or attention (so you can still talk to each other), the ingredients are easy but often require a trip to the store (bonus points for shopping together), and it's almost impossible to screw up.

It looks big and complicated -- bonus points! -- but is actually very simple.

You will need:
  • 30-45 minutes
  • A pasta pot and colander
  • A large skillet
  • A coarse cheese grater
  • Whole wheat rotini or penne pasta
  • A bunch of diceable, sautee-friendly veggies. I like:
    - grape tomatoes
    - bell pepper (yellow or orange; not green)
    - onion (sweet or red; or any kind, really)
    - garlic
    - spinach
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes. Brand matters; get the good stuff. Do not use jarred pasta sauce.
  • Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Italian spices. I like to keep it simple:
    - basil
    - oregano
    - crushed red pepper
    - NOT anything powdered
  • Any hard Italian cheese (Locatelli's Pecorino Romano is perfect)
  • A nice bottle of Italian wine: get something from Piedmonte for a classy girl, or a Supertuscan for somebody playful.

The basic idea is to cook the pasta while sauteing some veggies, then mix everything together.
  1. Dice all the dice-able veggies.
  2. Add EVOO to skillet, turn heat to medium
  3. Add whatever takes the longest to saute (onions) to skillet, stir and wait for it to sizzle
  4. Add water to pasta pot, heat to boil
  5. Once the water is boiling, add pasta and cook normally
  6. Once the stuff in the skillet is sizzling, stir again and add whatever takes the next-longest cooking time (garlic, then bell pepper, then tomatoes, then spinach), and nudge the temperature down just a little bit.
  7. Repeat this "add something, wait for sizzle, add something else" process for all the veggies, adding more EVOO if needed. It should take ~2 minutes each time; adjust temperate if it's going too fast.
  8. When you get to the veggies that don't really need to be cooked (tomatoes, spinach), drizzle balsamic vinegar over the skillet. You want roughly as much balsamic vinegar as olive oil. This cools things off, and the balsamic vinegar is ideal for tomatoes.
  9. Ideally, the pasta finishes cooking right as the veggies are all done. Remove both from heat.
  10. Drain pasta well, then put it back into the still-warm pot
  11. Pour can of crushed tomatoes over the hot pasta. Stir.
  12. Add a bunch of Italian spices to the hot pasta -- use more than you think you need. Stir.
  13. Pour sauteed veggies (and their EVOO + balsamic vinegar) over the hot pasta. Stir.
  14. Stir some more, put it on a plate, and grate the cheese over top. A fine/powdery grate is fine, but coarsely grated hard cheese looks really romantic.
  15. Don't forget the wine.

This will go with pretty much any side dish: crusty bread, peas and carrots, steamed broccoli and cauliflower, whatever.

If something goes wrong, it probably doesn't matter. You can leave out almost any of the ingredients and it'll turn out fine. Or, if one of the veggies burns or doesn't cook enough, it'll be masked by the rest.
