no. i've already explained this many times. i have to be able to access the servers on a regular basis for resetting the servers, updating code, maintenance, etc.

ill try and ask if you could be able to do it, i doubt they will give access to someone else but i will try.

Just stopping by to bump this thread and ask, did anything come of andy asking if nobo could get access?
I'm guessing no, since there isn't one, but...a european ladder would be freakin' awesome |

How much would it cost to rent a EU server per month? I'm sure there are more than a few EU players who wouldn't mind contributing/donating to get a EU ladder up (I certainly would).

nobo, i would ask this to Nol, he made the best/most popular eu tbd/1dm/ball servers, and im sure he would help you without problems..

I'd do it, and a load of people have tried to get me to do it, but it's really the access that's the problem. Personally, I don't see the interest in ladder, but the killer is really needing to run pretty much arbitrary code, that's updated whenever someone else wants, with whatever they want. It doesn't take a genius to realise that it would be quite easy to compromise the server (or leave it open to compromise by shoddy programming), or even do something silly like get into fork-bombs, infinite loops, filling up logs, etc. just by accident.
The costs of the server aren't a problem - hell you can run Altitude in the cheapest of Virtual Servers, or over any half-decent connection (some European countries have 100Mbps-to-the-home as standard) just not 100% reliably. If you wanted to do it properly, £/€ 50 a month would be overkill and allow you to run any number of servers, but you could do it for £10 a month with a decent VS host (Tagadab's cheapest VS's held up quite well for a server I set up for a friend). The problem is that if you start getting chucked off your VS host because of ToS violations, or hitting infinite loops and interfering with other customers etc. Even as a limited user, with everything locked down, there's an awful lot of mischief you can cause, even accidentally. If I have a server, then I've signed a contract saying I'm responsible for it, for traffic-overage, etc. and so it's a big problem to then trust a random stranger on the Internet with basically complete control over what happens on your server under their username. The only way it would happen would be under a complete chroot environment, with quotas and all sorts of other controls, and even then there's STILL the possibly of interfering with other services on the server and/or doing things against the terms of the server. And when you consider what ladder does, it really doesn't *NEED* that sort of power - a limited script, that can be audited, and doesn't need updating (or only needs updating-by-proxy by passing changes to the relevant admin) isn't that far-fetched. Hell, stick the code up on a website somewhere and provide a on-line update as a Linux package is infinitely preferable to only being able to hand admin off to a complete stranger. When it gets updated, I can download and do a quick diff on the package and see what changed and be pretty sure that it's safe to deploy. I don't think people would care that Europe ladder was off for a day while it catches up with rest-of-the-world ladder. But just handing off complete control to a stranger is a no-go for me, personally, and would be for anyone paying a lot for their servers or running other (non-Altitude) stuff on them. I see no reason that the ladder code can't be put online somewhere (even if access is secured to only ladder servers) and have admins "pull" updates when convenient to them, on their own schedule, giving them time to look at what the code does, etc. If that happened, I'd be infinitely more likely to start up a Euro ladder server. But allowing someone to access the server, probably with things like PHP and database access, is just asking for trouble - even if they never do anything deliberately malicious. |

Someone please try to host a game on the eu ladder #1 server and see if the stats are submitted to the website.
I believe the eu ladder server has the same name as the us ladder server so look for the one with less (or more) lag for now. |
