Escort Role

I've been enjoying this game for only a week or so now, and was hoping for some advice from those more experianced:

What would be a good build for an "escort" role?

By this I mean: I want a setup that is good for protecting the ball / bomb carrier. Is there a widly accepted standard for such a thing?

I was thinking the Loopie's EMP weapon might be good, but I'm not sure due to my inexperiance.

Any advice would be helpful, thank you.

Best escort imho is "heavies", that being bomber and explodet. This is simply because:
1) they can take alot of damage
2) they litterally knock enemy planes out of the way
3) you'll need them for defending anyways

Do you have any advice as to which red perk would be useful out of the options available?
Also, with the Explodet, can the missles hurt my allies?

Explo is the best escorter. Bomber kills better tho

I think I'll use the following:

Place: Explodet
Red: Director
Green: Repair Drone
Blue: Turbo Charger

Sounds like kick-ass.
Every one of the red perks works I think. They are all good in different ways. Thermobarics perhaps the easiest one to play effectively in the beginning.
Green and blue sounds good, those are by far the best (unless you opt for flexiwings).
