Default ffa_tourian

FFA_TOURIAN

Download v0.1 ~ Released 12/12/2010

Current map Terrain:

v0.1 Changes (from original concept)
~ Name changed to ffa_tourian, which it should have been all along... not sure where I got torsian from D:
~ Terrain size is now 2500x1500 (+ 500x0 from original). Original draft felt cramped so I increased the size, allowing me to space objects out a little more.
~ Terrain is now much more asymmetrical. (It's FFA.)
~ The foreground-doorways that lead into rooms have been widened a bit.
~ 3 wall/shield/missile powerups located along the center of the map (top/mid/bottom), on a 20-second spawn
~ 2 health-only PUs placed in the small rooms on the left and right, on a 30-second spawn

(Original explanation)

I wanted to play around with some sprite images, but was tired of seeing Mario-themes so I went with Metroid instead.

Note: All the graphics are from Metroid: Zero Mission, the 2004 remake of the original which was released on the GameBoy Advance. The Sprite-rips were obtained here and all credit goes to the people who put that together, I just downloaded the images and toyed around with them to produce this map.

I'm just playing around with the theme right now, so I'm working on a FFA map instead of something team-oriented. If there's enough interest I'll convert to TBD, but not ball. (I think the bumpy terrain wouldn't suit ball much...)

The map editor is being extremely gay, again, and completely failing at collision-outline-detection, so while I work out some (many) kinks I just have images for you to look at, though some initial visual feedback would be nice:

How it looks in-game:

I darkened the stock background images and reduced their saturation by a lot, but for the most part left the foreground images with their original colors. This hopefully makes the background/foreground contrast quite clear.

It is a small map, at just 2000x1500, so it's more suited for FFA games of maybe less than 8 players. (I was originally planning on making it a duals map, but then I remembered that I am literally the only person who likes duels so I switched to FFA at the last minute).

The map terrain is symmetrical, though I made things asymmetrical by randomly adding Metroids/monsters/Space Pirates around the map. If you're wondering where Samus is, take a closer look at Ridley.

Thoughts welcome.

[Edit: For reference on size for the picture again, that non-collidable room entranceway is about 1.5x the width of an explodet ... it's a tight fit but not too tight.

Wow metroid! Perhaps a more flattering pose of Samus; maybe shooting a missile or something at Ridley?

I was considering hiding a small turret inside samus' gun, so that when someone flys behind Ridley she starts shooting him in the mouth

The map would be better if the A was turned into an O

That might be interesting. Also the doors on the sides are wrap-arounds right?

Only if you use Samus' beam cannon to open them.

(No, they are not.)

I'll make a TBD_Norfair if this becomes a hit.

You should try to make a metroid stalk the player using layer tricks.

Okay, I was able to work out the bug. Release file in the first post.

I increased the map width by 500 pixels and played around with the terrain a lot, making it much more asymmetrical (it's FFA, so moar asymmetry = moar good)

Let me know what you think.

Also, I realized too late that the name should have been 'ffa_tourian' and not 'ffa_torsian'. If a mod could help me out and change the title of this thread I'd appreciate it, thanks.

1) Follow the download link at the top of the first post.
2) Download the file, ffa_tourian.altx
3) Place the file in the .../altitude/maps directory
(If using steam, .../steam/steamapps/common/altitude/maps)
4) Map should be ready to play, try out Training mode with some bots.

ffa_pathtotourian would have been too long, so I simplified it to ffa_tourian
