Major apology to =AIR=

SPeciaL asked me to help rename the =AIR= thread. In attempting to do so, I ended up duplicating the top post to use a moderator trick to rename the thread. This didn't work for some reason, so I perma-deleted the copy. Unfortunately (understatement of the year) this perma-deleted the entire thread.

From what I know of vBulletin, this means that the =AIR= thread is deleted and not recoverable.

You can't imagine how bad I feel about this. I am so sorry to everyone in =AIR=, to everyone who contributed to that thread, and to SPeciaL especially. I wish there was something I could do to rectify this, but I've scoured the vBulletin support forums and there doesn't seem to be a way.

If karlam/god can help, I know they will… but I think this one's on me.

Update: God didn't come through, but Sunaku did. She sent me links to the cached pages, which I've forwarded to SPeciaL. I've also saved all of those pages as PDFs. It doesn't help much in terms of re-creating the (code for the) forum posts, but at least the content is saved.

yeah pieface did that with the ladder map project thread

I mean technically you could spend hours recreating the entire thread by assigning posts, but I'm sure AIR will forgive you and let you off the hook for this one

ALT: I dunno if karl or lamster saves backups of the forum files (assuming not) but it's possible to restore from there >_>

We do keep monthly backups but they only support full restores (e.g. we lose all posts since the last backup was created). Some people have devised methods for attempting to partially restore threads, but based on my experience with vBulletin (for example, the odd way the original thread was deleted) this seems likely to cause more problems than it solves. Perhaps a new thread + manual restore (copy-paste each google backup page into a separate post) is the best solution? The formatting will be a bit weird, and the posts won't technically belong to the right users -- but it should be easy for everyone to see everything that was said and figure out who originally said it.

I don't think this will be much of a problem since we communicate mainly using our private forums, so only non members may have posted something important that is not also on our forums.

The worst for me is that the thread had the date when we officially created =Air=, and without it I only know we came to existence July 20 something.

Dammit tg why couldn't you of deleted the AH thread instead.... I mean... this is a terrible loss for the Air clan. I feel truly sorry that this has happened.

There's no way he could have..it's to big! Besides, tg knows that AH has very important contacts in ACLU.

Actually, the few members of =AIR= I've heard from have been extremely kind to me for the atrocity I accidentally wreaked on their thread. And I think I can fix the creation date but um, I'm a bit gun shy at the moment.

As I mentioned to SPeciaL last night, it's not possible to change the creation date to any arbitrary day. The top post's author must have a post from that day. Since SPeciaL had posts from July 18th and July 23rd, and because he did not want me to change it to either of those dates, I have left it as is.
