Updated website
updated the website after some A/B testing.
We are still running some website test so it will probably change some more but the general look and feel that it has now will stick around for a while. http://altitudegame.com |

If the general attitude in ladder is any indication, this game is super srs business.
On topic, I'm completely indifferent to the new one. It doesn't look ugly, but it doesn't jump out and make me go "WOW". |

wouldn't hurt updating the video with some live commentary and the santa hats etc

also, if you check out the diablo III website, they have a page for each character with its history and skills, etc...
wouldn't be a half bad idea imo to put - "meet the loopy (or a diff plane)" on the front page, (a picture of the loopy with text near it), - and when they click on it, perhaps a popup page (see: http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nhl...ory?id=6198238 [click on player name in the article]) - showing the in-game health/speed/damage (the ones seen on the "edit plane" page, screw the actual numbers those mean nothing to new players) - with a :30 to :60 second video of gameplay, highlighting each red perk) --tracker: show a plane trying to escape it, getting hunted down -- acid, show a smoking plane get hit by acid and explode, idk -- double fire: hell, just show it shooting, every new player loves that double fire |

furthermore (sorry for hundreds of posts but i hate losing ideas inside of a separate but equal post), i notice you never point out how many players can play in 1 match.
since this number has obviously been tested upwards of 32 v 32 in a server, perhaps give a breakdown of multiplayer on the front pages (picture, showing several planes shooting at each other - not on top of each other, keep the images crisp and distinct), and point out that players can engage in regulated, 5v5 tournaments, all the way up to 32 v 32 high flying fast paced chaos. on that point, have you fine gentlemen ever considered adding the ability for winners of tournaments (obv sanctioned by a mod or admin) to get little in-game (NOT STEAM) trophies next to their names or something (to save space - hover over a players name to see trophies) tangible rewards beyond mere level-based unlocks could be an important player-retention idea |

Hm, I agree with Sin here. The site is "complete" in the sense, but the fact that it reminds me of Wikipedia pages makes me sort of want to turn my head away from it. I appealing factor is, unfortunately lackluster. :\ Just throwing my opinion out there.

I suggest reverting back to the previous layout but instead of the minigun biplane pic, have a bunch of screenshots in a rotation. I understand the leaning towards a the cartoony theme of the game, but the new website is kind of over the top.

How google comes in to the picture I'm not as clear as others and how the new layout will resolve this I am even less clear. What search words are you looking for the site to pop up with? I can understand the frustration that altitude terms like "team base destruction" or "plane ball" doesn't make the site appear in the top 3. |

Is the theory behind the change that the descriptive keywords "launch," "smash," "grab," and "slam" get more google hits than "cartoon aerial dogfighter?"

I like the slogan, but if i was visiting that website for the first time, i would think this is some sort of Christmas themed game with the ball_snow background, and the red/white checkered loopy and missiles etc.I would suggest mayhem, cave, core for the background image..

Thanks for the feedback. We'll be running several tests over the next few weeks to help craft a better website (the goal, as always, is increasing the percentage of new visitors who download and run the game). Suggestions are appreciated.

I think you should add the missing words cause when people see an underwater mine I doubt they'd get its actually a ball. I also feel you should mention TF2 somehow for gameplay similarity (idk about google analytics but I assume a lot of people google for TF2 similar or something).
Add the quotes you hav in videos, the one about TF2 with planes and the one with Pillars, something like former starcraft progamer and sc2 lead balancer. sc2 mention would probably get you some more hits. For the youtube vid why not make a playlist? Personally the first vid is good, but why not add the sniplane video to the list and tyrs biplane video, both are pretty fun to watch and actually show gameplay for a bit longer. (You don't really lose anything, people will either close the player or continue watching after they see the trailer) EDIT: Why not add the demo as a bigger button? Something like a big "Play Demo Now!" under your catchy oneliner Last edited by Stormich; 03-10-2011 at 07:30 AM. |

I like the change. Its lighter, cleaner. This allows you to make game colored elements to jump off the screen.
I understand this is a draft because elements composition is prety crapy right now and thats, imo, enough for making some of us to dislike this. The background image was well chosen, "lollycowboy" is amazing (logo potential imo) but overlayering kills it. Right now you have a semi-transparent box due the background composition - to allow us seing what's hapening in the back -, but it should happen in the oposite way. Define a place to put info, then, develop the action around it. Now there are duplicate buttons ofc but, minimize the links as much as possible. The visual adictions mentioned in previous posts are mandatory, Keep lettering small - kids eyes are ok. Make it so that one doesnt need to scroll. |

Hmm imo the snowman is being overused. You should put a clean screenshot of a tbd game (on mayhem's centre let's say) instead in my opinion.

Is it just me or is there an awkward looking bar across the top of the page? I'm on an iPad so it might have something to do with that but the bar definitely feels out of place. :X

the single thing that got me to download this game was the gameplay video, specifically that 'goalie of the year' clip and the 'great pass' clip. Even though, looking back, they aren't even the greatest plays, but I thought they were pretty sick when I was watching them. More of that? Maybe a trick shot of some sort?

Umm,
Why not have a web design contest and let people make layouts in photoshop? You guys can take what you like from each submission and combine them. If you guys want assistance with CSS and styling I can volunteer to help. I could go on and on about the changes but, basically I suggest a design contest. |

comparing the sites:
http://altitudegame.com/index_0_20110309.html vs http://altitudegame.com/index_0_20110323.html Snow improves the chances people click something and doubles the number of people who click download. However, the number of people who end up making accounts is only slightly better and our numbers are so small it's difficult to pick a clear victor. Last edited by Karl; 04-22-2011 at 12:39 AM. |

The new site just feels so amateur to me. maybe your analytics aren't telling you that the new one is good, they're telling you that there's something terribly broken (salesmanship-wise) with your old design? really not trying to be a jerk, but I just find it hard to believe that the new site is where you want to go. I dunno. maybe the core design is good, but it seems like you could keep that intact still but polish it more so you have something that looks more legit.
I also suspect that the TYPE of players you'll get will be lower quality. less likely to buy, lower playtimes, less likely to evangelize the game. site A is selling a fancy pants high quality game (probably too much so!), site B is selling a fun budget title. the guys that gravitate towards option B are going to treat it more as a disposable product. which is fine if it means you get the numbers, but just be careful to make sure that the trade off is worth it. if you're only getting _slightly_ more accounts, that might equal less full game conversions in the long run. |

it looks better at higher res since you can see more of the background art. 1024x768 looks pretty meh though.
