Default Cave Story
Possibly the greatest 2D platformer ever made, it just so happens that it was made by one man, AND it's absolutely free.

I suggest playing through once, then going through a second time with a guide and getting all the extra stuff, you'll need it for the best speed run section ever devised.

Cave story still better. This guy makes it look stupidly easy, I've never been able to finish off the final forms of the boss, let alone do a speed run.

Great game. I've played through it quite a bit to try out the different weapons and secret items like Curly's panties and whatnot. The Sacred Ground levels were awesome. Great soundtrack too. Been awhile since I've played it, been bored lately so maybe this is a sign to give it another whirl. Also, Balrog ftw. HUZZAH!!

You can pay for cave story + (better graphics, new modes, etc..) but the original is still free. DL IT NAO.
