Massive Spikes on ladder servers

Ladder seems to be lagging A LOT more than normal today, every 3-5 minutes (sometimes less) there are big spikes of 50-100ms. Server restart needed?

Pressing TAB shows all players simultaneous spiking.. plus even when it isn't showing in the TAB screen, it seems to be semi-warpish movement

AT&T had a major fiber cut and as a result we lost 2 of our primary fiber links. We're currently running on copper at reduced speeds and will be until the fiber cut has been repaired. I do not have an ETA yet from ATT but will update when I do.

I don't know if this was related to your issues yesterday but you will have high latency now.

yea its disgusting laggy right now, spikes are going to like 500 - 999 consistently for minutes at a time!

ladder servers working, but getting severe server-wide spikes pretty consistently. hopefully the issue resolves itself, not sure there's anything you can do to help specifically (unless minecraft is hogging resources again)

Minecraft servers always want more resources.

i think it's an issue on the server itself now.. reported pings in the game [for everyone] spike to 300+ for a few seconds, as the others mentioned.. but i've been running a regular ping (from shell prompt) against the server the whole time i've been playing:

not a connectivity issue anymore.

Are ladder servers considered to be lag free now? Because I'm still getting slight spikes, wonder how it is for other non-USA players.

If you're spiking outside of the US then I'm not really concerned, but if you're on a US broadband connection and spiking let me know when and what ISP. I've also mentioned before that 12AM-6AM CST there may be spikes due to nightly things I run, I'm not sure what time that is in Europe.

Hmm, the spikes are fairly recent, the thing is it happens to everyone from Europe. Like when I press TAB and see, all Euros seem to spike at the same time and probably US too but I couldn't notice much due to the colour not changing probably. This was never seen before. People don't notice too much when a 30 ping user spiking to 120 but they will notice in-game when 130 ping user spikes to 550.

So as I understand it, since recently you're utilizing the server to run more cron jobs/processes like Minecraft etc. ? Just trying to understand the cause of this.

No, I run the same things I always have. Unless the spikes are seen by everyone at the same time (not just euros), then it's more likely a network issue outside of my control.

I'm getting the spikes. I'm on Qwest now Centurylink (i.e. centurylink just bought qwest).

To be fair my ISP ****ing sucks and I lag out quite a bit but when my net is good, I still get server side spikes.

yeah we were having issues around the nightly time frame you mentioned. the server-wide lag spikes are not super frequent, but probably average one or two per game. might be more common and i'm just not holding tab at the right times, but it usually appears to be a decent mix of both euros and us players spiking simultaneously, even those with normally stable connections.

I made some changes a few minutes ago let me know if that improved anything. If it's still going on I'll replace the cables since that was the only thing that changed really during the server move.

Player 2 (I didn't look at who it was) was mine skipping and people were complaining, but looking at his spikes he's gotta be background downloading or playing on wireless (he got ping kicked at the end).
