Default Biplanes - Old Altitude

After doing quite a bit of searching I have come across several different files for biplanes today. The problem with them was the two we're .zips and had been corrupted causing them not to open, the third was missing files.

After a bit of work I have gotten a working version together and have written a small readme file to help you get it working right.

I've added .bat files to make launching the program easier, as without them you'd have to manually enter stuff into the command prompt.

I know it works with Java 1.6 (included in .rar), but I can't guarantee any other versions as I have not tested them. It will work with windows and it might work on Mac OS and Linux but I don't know. Test it if you wish.

This is simply to look at and perhaps mess around a bit and see what it's like, but my main goal in posting this is to help archive it as it's very difficult to find a copy.

If anyone would like to try playing it sometime I'll host a server, just PM me and well give it a shot sometime as I'd like to try it with others

Everything you need is in the .RAR file. I have done virus scans and this file is all good to go in case you're worried.

Enjoy!

UPDATE: I tested this with the most recent version of Java and everything seems to work fine, but this does not appear to work on Windows 7 for whatever reason. I use XP so I can't test it on Windows 7, but someone else has and it wouldn't work.

Altitude was originally called Biplanes. Yep, back in my day, we didn't have these fancy shmancy perks you youngins are so fond of. Loopies didn't have tail rudders, and dumb bombs was all you needed. Now all of you get off my lawn.

Loopy didn't even exist. it was snoopy (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_o8_MS64lT...w18190237.jpeg) and his secondary weapon was woodstock... the awesome plane/secondary of all time.

I thought biplanes was an old 8-bit 2D shooter that inspired Altitude. I think I saw a video of Lam and Karl playing it, looked like this.

Unless old altitude (which is what your screenshot shows) was called biplanes. Shame it doesn't run on osx.

I messed around on OS X with it tonight and it looked somewhat promising, but I don't think there is anyway to make it work.

Also I've fixed it to work on Windows Vista and 7 so the stupid updating error won't happen. I'll upload it soon.

Thanks anyways for trying. Do you know why it doesn't work? Does it use windows-only functions in addition to the multi-os java platfom?

Basically, there are two games that people called Biplanes. The first was actually a mini-game on the Triple Action Intellivision game. Here's a video (that screenshot seems to be a remake of the original):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_PDo3V15lY

It was probably my favorite game on that console, and also was the favorite of the programmers at Mattel! The other two games on the cartridge were a tank game that was similar to the tanks in Atari Combat and a really terrible car racing game.

Later on, Lamster made an unnamed game that everyone called "Biplanes" by default even though it didn't really have a name because Lamster is terrible at naming things and that's why we have a ****ing plane called the EXPLODET but I digress - ANYWAY! - that game was inspired by the original Intellivision Biplanes, and it's the one the OP started this thread about. Eventually that game was christened Altitude after a year or two or three or something, but by that point people had been calling it Biplanes for so long that the new name never stuck.

Eventually, he decided to do a "for real" version of the old java Altitude/Biplanes and the newer name finally started getting used for reals.
