Speed Tests

As I am sure most of you are aware, speedtest.net is a site which allows you to check your ping, DL speed and UL speed. I've used it before at home to see how far below the advertised our speed we actually get (interestingly my mobile internet is faster, so I don't really accept the excuse that our local exchange is bad), but this is the first time I've used it at college out of curiosity. Hot Damn Cambridge Y UR FREE INTERNET SO FAST?



EDIT: Just tried it again, even faster. I wonder what it's like at 2am with little traffic

I get 0.5mb DL, and thats when my internet isn't spiking uncontrollably for no apparent reason.

My home internet is similar.

On a side note, my College keeps disconnecting me because they think "Steam.exe" is P2P software.

Weirdly, I get twice the upload speed as download.

Though I'd really like to have a little more upload speed. Streaming quality (even with optimized setting and stuff) is pretty awful with only 1mb/s

The vast majority of ISP's limit the hell out of upload speeds to keep people from hosting lots of stuff on their connections, potentially congesting the network.

Network loads and local competition generally factor into what speeds ISP's go with. They assume most people only care about download speeds, so that's usually the direction the balance tips.

A lot of these ISP's have higher priced hosting packages they're trying to sell, too.

It is it's own ISP I think. It has an entire network set up between the colleges called JANET and I assume there is some hub for it somewhere. A lot of the colleges are filthy filthy rich so it wouldn't surprise me if one just decided to become an ISP one day.
