for $900 you could get a really good PC.

Seriously Flight those specs are terrible. 2 gigs of RAM? You need at /least/ 4, and I wouldn't buy anything with less than 8.

yeah we talked about this and i would build a pc and ship it to you for the money but it would be confiscated

that computer is a lot better than what you have, but isn't good at all for that price

but, if this G5 is way better than my imac, i think i gonna pick it.

I wouldn't buy a PPC Mac if I were you, try to look for a used Intel machine with a price you can afford.

Don't buy it. PowerPC (the G5 Chip) is worse overall than the Intel chips.

EDIT: IF YOU STILL HAVE YOUR IMAC: In all honesty, I'd upgrade the RAM in your iMac to 4GB at least. Drop in a DVD Drive if you want. Upgrade the HD to a larger one if you need the space, SSD if you want the speed (but it'll be expensive).

Regarding processor:

http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl...o-imac-g5.html

Basically, at the time of release, programs were being written for Universal Binary (Both Intel and PPC); in which case the Core Duo wins. If they were written for older PPC Systems, the Intel would use a simulator (basically) called Rosetta, slowing it down, so PPC would win.

Altitude is designed for Intel machines. As OSX upgraded, so did its support for optimization of Intel processors.

Thus, Intel > PPC for pretty much all apps on the market.

In addition, the RAM is faster in the iMac.

Finally the graphics card is better in the iMac (assuming stock setup) as well: X1600 vs a GeForce 6600 in the Mac Pro

Anyway, the Mac Pro is a downgrade to the iMac, is overpriced by double (I can pick up one on Ebay right now for $350 USD free shipping), and runs a PowerPC Chip. Many programs are optimized if not written for Intel machines only. You don't want to force yourself into a situation where you can't even run newer programs.

I mean at that price point on Ebay:

$800

iMac

3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB (2x2GB) RAM
500GB Hard Drive
8x SuperDrive DVD Burner,
nVIDIA GeForce 9400M Graphics
21.5" LED Backlit 16:9 Widescreen Display
iSight Camera, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
802.11n Airport Extreme Wi-Fi
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

That's for a 2 year old iMac; Core 2 Duo.

On Apple's website you can pickup this beauty:

Refurbished iMac 21.5-inch 2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
Originally released May 2011
21.5-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display
4GB memory
500GB hard drive
8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics with 512MB memory

Built-in FaceTime HD camera

That's a 2011 model. $1000

Heck, for $700:

Refurbished MacBook Air 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Originally released October 2010
11.6-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display

2GB memory

64GB flash storage
NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
FaceTime camera

All those would blow the doors off of that PowerMac G5.

Anyway, long story short: many, many better Macs out there for far less than the G5. The G5 is a pretty sweet looking desktop (I have a G4 myself), but not worth that sort of money nor would I recommend it for any gaming use. And the iMac is the better computer between the two.

As an aside, I just checked out Apple's website for Brazil: Holy hell are the computers priced high! The US MacBook Air Base model is $1000USD; R$ 3000 for Brazil which is ~ $1750 USD. That's ridiculous. No wonder you aren't looking at a new Mac.

Flight didn't you say you were a pilot? Even if pilots aren't that well payed in Brazil surely you can stop off, convert some money and buy one somewhere else?

In any case Altitude requires bugger all to run so i doubt it would make an ounce of difference what you were running it on. If you want an enjoyable altitude experience, move to the usa.

In all honesty though, best upgrade you can do with Mac OS X is RAM Upgrade. Mac OS X has always been a bit RAM unfriendly; even 2GB should see a world of difference.

Actually, apparently 2GB is the max your computer can support.

PC2-5300 DDR2 SO-DIMM. Get 2x1GB sticks. No more than $25 USD.

Don't go back to PowerPC, you will not be able to play Alty better and programs like Photoshop and whatever else will not run as well.

That's not surprising. Macs are always more expensive outside the US, even in EU they're much more pricey in comparison... avoiding saying anything more to not start more Mac vs PC lamewars.

100 USD for 2GB RAM? Is this component only for Macs? If so, I really feel sorry for you Mac lovers Do you also need specilized personell to install those memories?

I get 4x4GB (plus its Corsair latest ones!) for that kind of money in Sweden, 16GB is like a server machine. Have you ever heard of Linux?
