Default Palace of Minos

Here's a tribute to one of my favorite Greek Myths. I've made a few maps, but this one is the first to come together.

Everything is original except the Texas Longhorns logo. It makes a great Minotaur head.

I've uploaded it to the Community Maps Server (Thanks to michael for that).

I'm sticking with ffa for now. There is a flood of tbd, and I want to get the hang of GIMP and the Altitude editor. Any feedback is welcome and much appreciated.

looks nice good work.

Seems like you have good photoshop skills. Maybe you should make some tdb maps. Although right now, there is not much incentive for map makers to make new maps when it will never be played on seriously. I cant even playtest maimer's locomotion because its burried in the experimental server which no one relavent plays on (no offense to michael, but its hard to get good games on servers other than official 1-4).

I think there really needs to be some kind of method to get top quality maps onto the official servers.

sorry for ranting on your thread.

Actually, what would be really nice right now is some good TDM and OBJ maps. The ones that are up right now are kind of ghetto. :/

I totally agree, I am getting tired of playing the same 5 or 6 maps that rotate on the official servers. At the very least locomotion should be added, and probably some of the other maps though I haven't tried them.

Well, I guess there would have to be a pretty rigorous screening & testing process before uploading user-made maps to official servers. In my mind, that's partly what the community server is for.

In any case, it looks like 333wolf took the map and turned it into a tbd (calling my original a "dud" in the process). No one wants ffa I guess.

A pretty good alteration, however, if a bit turret heavy.

Yeah no one really plays FFA, I feel like deathmatch style modes have made it somewhat obsolete unless you just like chaotic newb-hunting.

map looks really cool, i haven't played it yet so i won't give you any feedback till later i just got so mad when i read about this i had to post right away. So i guess since were doing this independently and since the maps are so easily editable that some people think that these maps are free for anybody to take and do with as they like. This is not the case. I feel like taking individual pieces of art from other peoples maps is acceptable since we do have such a tight community but to take someones whole map, call it a "dud" and then make alterations and release it under your own name is the most disrespectful thing i've seen done in the altitude community. Michael please delete 333wolf's version of this map immediately. And to 333wolf this kind of plagerism will not be accepted, you didn't even keep the original map name!! i mean egyptian war?? do you even know where minos is? please gtfo of here and don't come back.

Thanks for the support, pig_bomb. My initial reaction was the same as yours, and believe me, I'd rather have been credited for the work.

Certainly, there are those of us who hold themselves to a higher standard of conduct, but this is the internet, after all, and thick skin is a must.

If people end up having fun on a map I created (altered or not), then that is sort of a reward in and of itself.

I appreciate your call to have the altered map pulled, but I'd settle for artwork credit.

The Mummy's Curse is great, by the way.

not sure if you're serious, but just in case: it's basically the bomb plant mode from CS. so think TDM, but one of the teams can win by planting a bomb on the enemy base instead of just killing everyone.

thanks blind, the map plays quite well, the simple design is good for the size of the map. The minotaurs head looks collidable, you shouldn't give any noncollidable object outlines. i think the underground area could use some more work, take the middleground level as an example. There also seem to be little white artifacts all around the the outlines inside the cave, i think you should try to remove them. Are you using illustrator? all your outlines seem jagged and pixelated, the whole level would look a lot better if you had nice smooth outlines and about the thickness of the one on the minotaur. I think you should put a gradient in the sky and experiment with making your background layers different sizes.

for now i think you should leave it as a ffa on the experimental server chances are you won't get much feedback from the people playing that server anyways. But if you want to try and get it on an official server i would suggest making it into a deathmatch, the mode really needs some specialised maps and i think this one would work really well. I noticed a new bunch of servers called PD official, they have a deathmatch server so they might upload it

This was my attempt to make it look "dusty" and it didn't work. I'm cleaning it up now. I keep looking at the parallax work on the official cave map - but I'll check middleground too.

I think this is me tryingt to make it look "cartoon-y". I'm using GIMP. I set the size of a collide-able lines at 5 pixels, and lines a plane could move through at 2 pixles. There are a lot of straight angles and hard edges too. I 'll experiment with fuzzy edges.

Another idea is to draw the map bigger and reduce the size after importing... hmmmm.
