Default 7v7 TBD servers

'ey.

Currently there are quite a few TBD servers that are up during most of the day. Thing is, they are all 7v7 servers. Why is this so when all of the competetive games are played 5v5.
If the competetive playerbase wants to expand, why aren't there any servers that would have those 5v5 games to serve as stepping stones for ladder and league games?

The 5v5 TBD is very unforgiving if you play "soloman 3000" mode. It puts an emphasis on getting kills and staying alive during pushes and when defending. In 7v7 games, 1 plane here or there doesn't really make a difference and pushes are really hard to pull off. In that sense, the 7v7 servers don't really encourage on team play.
The 7v7 servers give wrong impression about what competetive TBD could be like, aswell.

The gap between the good and the bad TBD players is massive so why make it even harder for new players to start playing competetively by not having proper servers?

Proposed solution: someone should host 5v5 server or reduce their currently hosted servers size. Or atleast make the server 6v6 since that would be so much closer to the competetive setup.

Thoughts?

This should be in general discussion but (j)whatever.

The cool thing about ball is that you can have relatively decent games outside of ladder and a 5v5 tbd server without noob maps could bring the same for the tbd.
However most servers have the ladder problem of being abandoned by anyone who has any power to change anything.

The problem with 5 v 5 servers is that (as you point out) one plane matters a lot. Quite aside from the issue of very new players, the high player turnover of public servers mean that one team could be down to 4 men for quite a long time, which completely does them over.

I think one or two 6 v 6 servers might be the way to go.

One can look to J's idea as a Dojo server but for TBD. I've always suggested something like it but then I get lyched by ball players.

Basically the same concept as Dojo but with TBD mode.

Put bots on expert mode IMO. In Dojo, for example, I don't know what level the bots are, but they are more competent than many players. Then the lack of players won't be such a problem.

Also, servers like this need to have admins IMO, the best thing about AIR EU, SMILE, Dojo, etc. is that admins are there often to solve any issues or to drop spectators if the server is full.

The current TBD pubs are terrible. New players will never learn how to push or defend properly. Even worse, they can't get a feeling of how important each kill and each move you make is in competitive TBD, because the pubs are complete cluster****s. Furthermore, these servers should not have the "noob maps", like glidepark and whatnot. Those should be kept in new player levels.

I tried hosting a 5v5 Hideout and it didn't really take off for reasons Rib already pointed out. 6v6 could be worth a shot. btw I miss captains games =(

Can we get some insight from server hosts?

Also, can some admin move this to general discussion.

I agree, 5v5 tbd would be cool. But I think that this suggestion will come to nothing unless someone steps up and hosts a server for it.

IMO 5v5 would work if the bots were on Expert. 6v6 would be better for hooking in newer players, though. If this does happen I'd like to see competitive maps only. Maybe we'll have a more active TBD community again. I miss TBD ladder.

If enough people want a 5v5 server im happy to rent a dedi for it. Most of the time i see either the Hideout or official 1 full and perhaps a few others somewhere else so im not sold on the need / want for this atm.

In that case, 6v6 would be the best option then.

this is a great idea j. coming soon....

the return of pineapples away tbd !

the server, already the host of pineapples 1dm, is in chicago (US). i'll make it 5v5, required level 60, and expert bots (naturally). it'll have some additional maps than can't be found on the officials and admins to keep out the riffraff. i might even make a script to allow for some spectator slots.

Sybernaut has kindly hosted some servers for us, including a 5v5 tbd server.
The servers need some tweaking tho, atm they seem to be a bit spiky every now and then.

I'll post something in the server subthread once they're "ready".

For now the server goes by the name 5v5 experimental tbd.
