Lightbulb Perspective Altering Films

I know the TV show/movie thread has been done, but I'm looking for something deeper. I'm looking for insightful films. Media that has changed your perspective on life, love, morality, or anything really. Powerful movies that resonate within the viewer a sense of wonder, mystery, or clarity.

A revolutionary film for my psyche is a Sean Penn piece called Into the Wild. Containing a beautiful soundtrack crafted by Eddie Vedder, the biographical film follows the cathartic journey of free spirit Christopher McCandless, as he ventures deeper and deeper into the Alaskan wilderness to separate himself from consumerism and become one with nature. Barring the presence of a character portrayed by Kristen Stewart, Into the Wild is a transcendent masterpiece of the human soul. For self-liberation, watch this film!

Which movie(s) has/have changed your outlook on the world?

I liked Prometheus. Definitely made me think differently about the differences between believing in a scientifical answer to the big questions of life and the religious way. It might not be a deep movie, but definitely worth watching.

From all the movies I've seen in 16 years, I gotta say The Pianist fits the best for me in here. I watched it when I was 7 and is probably the cause that made realize that people aren't good at all; definitely took away the perspective I had of a world with no harm and happy families as a child. A great movie to meditate about ourselves.

Also, it's why now I'm an asshole to those who deserve it.

By the way, that video is really cute, I like how she says Coco (I think that's what she says).

the avengers was an incredible narrative on the imminence of a dystopian future while at the same time a stunningly well done redemption tale along the lines of beauty and the beast

a true masterpiece

One film that i first watched when i was 5 and have watched probably 10 - 15 times since is Blues brothers lol

Feat. none less than john lee hooker and james brown!

I love the way it flows and the comedy is great too.

Not sure it fits the philosophical genre but id definitely inspired me!

While not a movie, the 2005 Doctor Who series has really challenged the way I view love. As well as being a really good sci-fi show it has good messages ingrained in it.

Yeah, in a broad sense - insight into the human mind or something like that.

And it's a brilliant film.

Some of those are more specific than that though. To Kill a Mockingbird deals with prejudice and coming of age (although the book is way better)

one flew over the cuckoo's nest is good, yeah.

Something you might also like is the series produced by Derren Brown. I think the way he deals with people is quite interesting.

Yeah, I'd recommend books over films.

Read Philip K. Dick, find perspective altered.

If you're lazy then I think he's had about 10 books made into films, but the only one that really stays true to its book is 'A Scanner Darkly'. Blade runner is a great film, but it isn't 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'.

If you liked the movie I highly recommend you read the book the movie was based off of, of the same name, by Jon Krakauer. One of my favorite books that I've read more than once. I haven't brought myself to see the movie though, I know it won't live up to my expectations from reading the book so many times.

yeah its really good. Another good read on the 1930s depression would be The Grapes of Wrath, also by Steinbeck, I suggest reading it if you haven't

I saw A Scanner Darkly when I was 14 - I thought it was the weirdest **** I'd ever seen. I'd definitely like to watch it again as at that age I really had no clue what was going on.

Top Gun. You watch it as a kid and then a teenager thinking Maverick was the ****.

Then you rewatch it as an adult and realize Iceman was right the entire time.

agreed. androids is about a million times better than blade runner storywise, but BR has cool lightup umbrellas and other visual contributions.

when i was younger i read heinlein's stranger in a strange land and it was quite mind altering. now i'm all about free love and cannibalism.

Took your advice and grabbed a copy of the book earlier today. I can't put this thing down, & can't remember the last time I got goosebumps from reading a book

Default Addition to the list

Cloud Atlas is unlike any movie I've ever seen before. Set in the past, present, and future, it provides a very captivating analysis on rebirth, deja vu, and the role of society in the 'bigger picture' of life. It is difficult to describe in mere words, so I really recommend you see it. I believe it was just in theaters, but the scurvy pirates out there will find another way to view it, I'm sure

What really makes this movie stand out is the cast and multi-character roles for each actor. Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, and Hugo Weaving each portray at least 5 completely different characters, spanning race, gender, and time. Sturgess as a neo-Korean hero and Weaving as the evil, masculine Nurse Noakes provided much entertainment.

It's a drama, thriller, sci-fi, comedy all-in-one... check it out!
