Google Spider

I've seen this so often on the "Who's Online" page and never gave it a second thought. What exactly is this "Google Spider"?

A computer spider is a bot that scourers web pages looking for information. Google's spider is looking for information that it uses for it's search engine.

It's just a fancy term for a program that index pages on the internet, in this case for google.

It probably stems from "crawling the web" or a "crawler" as it lazily indexes web pages. It's quite normal to have publicly visible pages on the internet be indexed by google, yahoo, bing and other similar spiders.
