First off, I know I said I wasn't going to run another tournament, but I don't like how APL is ending and I don't want that to define my tournament running capabilities. Also, I have not found a capable replacement, and with APL ending soon, I don't want like a power struggle over who is to run what come along.

I suggest people take a long hard time to look over the rules. If you think there needs to be a rule change we can discuss this in a separate thread. I don't want people clamoring for rule changes after the league has started.

I am not having a pre-season as I may have suggested in the original post, since there are no real new teams other than r87 and they are not really new. I still want rosters to be posted by sunday. A team without their roster posted will be considered not registered and will not be included in whatever schedule I come up with for regular season. I will be talking with Aki and others about the type of scheduling people will prefer once I know the final count of teams on sunday.

Just as a heads up that I will likely postpone the start of the SL if we have not found a suitable host for the apl/ladder servers etc.

I am going to postpone the start of SL by one week. It will begin next week. It will likely be that we will be using private servers that teams provide. Vlix and Smile have 3 servers between them. ComanderNoval has offered stable servers that dojo run off, so I work with him this weekend to get them set-up they will both be US based so we should have 3 euro servers and 4 US which should work I believe.

I will be busy working today and tomorrow, I will try to respond to any questions anyone has.

Unfortunately we don't have smile servers anymore, because crack left and hosted servers for us. But he'll probably provide EU servers for SL.

Oh, Well then I will probably ask ComanderNoval to make a euro server as he said he had that capability.

idk if you have seen my post in the thread in the ladder forums, but I set up some servers hosted on Amazon EC2.

Amazon provides basically a really lengthy 1 year trial period with their "free usage tier". This allows enough VM hours for one micro VM instance to be run continously for one year for free.

Due to relatively low memory in the micro instance (613mb), I think they should be stress tested before using for league. I believe that will likely work just fine though. I invite anyone scrimming this Sunday to use my servers.

US East (N Virginia) servers are named EC2 USA League 1 & 2. I was running 4 league servers but temporarily have replaced two with football servers, Football (USA East #1 & #2) as I figure they will likely fill up and be a good test.

I also have a Euro (Ireland) EC2 instance with servers named EC2 Euro League 1 through 4.

Pings seem pretty good to both locations. The servers should be all ready for league use pending a successful test, other than needing to add a pw (will be current league pw when added) and any admins.

However, I can only run one EC2 instance continously for free for one year, so the Euro servers are only up briefly for testing. I do not mind running them on demand though (offline except for 4-5 hours on Sundays) as that would hardly cost anything or nothing if I turn off the USA servers overnight one night each week when they are empty anyway.

Anyone can sign up for the free year of EC2 and I put together a step by step guide to setting up Altitude servers on EC2 yesterday. Can convert it into pdf format and upload it if anyone wants to set up their own servers.

According to the wiki, a server with at least 512 MB of memory should be fine.

It will most likely work great, but I don't want to say here is a stable server to use with league without being extremely confident it will hold up with 2-4 full servers running. I'd feel better if it was tested prior to real matches being played on it.

Note that I did just discover that EU ladder was hosted on an ec2 micro instance at some point. So unless the micro instance specs were higher at the time which I think is unlikely, that definitely raises my confidence level that this can easily handle league play.

Also looks like Carlos has an EC2 server up. One of us could host USA and other host Euro if needed? Or one host USA league and other host USA ladder.

Likely a final update on my test servers for Sunday.

I have taken down the EC2 Ireland instance as the pings were a little disappointing. I have replaced it with a UK VPS that I think will work great for us. The Vlix servers are awful for us in USA. Old EU ladder and other servers were not great either. I think this may be better than any Euro server I have ever played on. I am willing to pay for an inexpensive, but decent, euro VPS (this one is $7USD per month, 2GB RAM) primarily to offer for EU ladder, but also for league use. Ladder took a big hit when the euro server started having issues and later was taken offline. Hoping this can help increase the hours ladder is active and provide a better experience for US players on euro servers for league.

In addition I have added a second set of USA test servers. These are in New York. The VPS has pretty good specs, good user reviews, and is crazy cheap at only $19/year (!). Worth a try imo.

***************

Servers are now password protected with our league pw. Should be scrim ready with all league ball+tbd maps and necessary server commands enabled. Hope you give them a try today.

League Test Server #1-#3 (USA - New York)
League Test Server #4-#6 (USA - Virginia)
League Test Server #7-#10 (EU)

Did a quick ping test:
On Vlix private, 50ms
Vanish EU, 43ms
NY, 125ms
Virginia, 120ms
Ladder, 140ms

All of the pings were steady. Note that I only tested for some 10 seconds or so on each.

Virginia: 113~
Ladder: 126~

Also very steady for me. Tested for about 30s.

Not sure how having other players around would affect the ping but the stats I get are as follows:

vlix: 38-40
Vanish EU: 25-26
NY: 108-110
Virginia: 105-108
Ladder: 117-109

I'm located in the UK by the way. The league servers that have been set up provide me with the best ping that I could ever hope to get. The ping is as low as from any other online game I play.
I already forgot about the good old days when I could play on ladder with 40ish plus ping. Would be awesome to play it at as low as mid twenties. Though I guess the overall experience also depends on how the numbers would fare with the rest of the community.

Copenhagen (Denmark):

Vlix: 29-30
Vanish EU: 21-28
NY: 92-94
Virginia: 100-105
Ladder: 112-115

Figured I'd contribute a little, lol

Thanks for posting pings. Yeah the USA server pings are likely not going to be much different than the current ladder pings. They are just a couple possible options to replace the servers we are losing to compare with any alternative servers others may have.

Where I am hoping to see a big improvement is the UK server. From here in midwest USA I get pings of 140 to 160+ on other EU servers. My ping to this one is stable around 125. Hoping others in USA see similar reductions in ping.

edit:

Unsurprisingly the cheap New York server is probably not going to work. Looks like as we are getting into heavier traffic times in the US the pings are getting too high.

Got at least 5v5 going in the EU test servers. Sounds like it works really well for Euro's but some non euro's experienced occasional spiking.

Willing to try setting up some other UK servers to test if these prove not stable enough to some in USA (great ping for me though compared to other EU servers).

How does that compare to your ping to other EU servers?

Default SL8 Servers

As posted earlier, I agreed to host a few "public servers" for use during SL. They are open to all clans without a home server. They are as follows:

SL8 League Server - US1 (Chicago)

SL8 League Server - US2 (Chicago)

SL8 League Server - EU (Netherlands)

These servers are up and running now. Passwords to these servers = skyleague

Admins have been assigned as follows:

DN
Mikesol
Aki
SSD
(& me in a pinch)

Max Ping has been set @ 350

I created a simple lobby and that is the only map on rotation.

PM or post any issues....

I also hosted one to make sure we will have enough , similar to the SMILE servers of last season. Name is SL8 League Server - EU2. Admins are all captains and SL admins.

DN are you thinking of adding non-official maps to the mappool? For example the ones that are in the ladder rotation..
