Default 999 ping on my own server?

I made an experimental server, using all the default Port values.

I could join my server, but the ping would be at 999, so that i'd get kicked out of my own server, and upon updating the server list, my server would be gone for a while. Sometimes it would go to 500 ping - usually, it was either gone or at 999 ping. At one point, the ping suddenly went to 0, which is supposedly what it's supposed to be for. After joining and playing for perhaps three seconds, it would jumped up to 999 and kick me out again. Whats going on?

I don't have a server but when my ping spikes over 999, it's usually because my crappy wireless internet has died.

1. Yes, most of them were my own maps.
2. Foreword ports? Em... can you explain that to me? and
3. No, it does not say Error, shutting down server.

Not to my knowledge.

Just to test it out, I made a server using only default values and default maps. Still no go. Just says:

To lower your ping, close other network applications such as torrent downloaders. If your ping is still too high, join another server or host your own server.
No errors, no nuthin...
