Default Anime appreciation thread

I've recently dedicated more than a day of my life into watching some anime nonstop, specifically Code Geass (R2 as well) and this got me hooked into watching more. I have seen a lot more animes through the past years such as Fullmetal Alchemist, Inuyasha, Shingeki no Kyojin and such though I know as well of Gintama or Fate/stay Night / Fate Zero but I haven't seen these last two yet.

What I ask now is for anyone to share ITT any good anime they've seen already, as I know there are like a billion out there. I'm watching at the moment Mashiroiro Symphony, which is pretty gay but it's whatever. Magi Madoka was a thing though.

No spoilers pls.

Anything that's an 8 or higher is a recommended watch. Anything that's a 10 is a must watch. Enjoy.

welcome brother...

here are a few of my favorites:

evangelion (one of the greatest human achievements in art)
chihayafuru (one of the most skillfully crafted series, it's too good)
mushishi (beautiful and relaxing ambient anime)
hataraku maou-sama (lightweight & fun)
steins;gate (second aki's recommendation, really great multigenre anime)
spirited away (and others by miyazaki)

there's so much good anime, just keep an open mind and explore

I've been tempted to watch Evangelion for the longest time but my brother, who's also an avid watcher like you guys, tells me that it's better to watch a handful of any kind of anime before moving on with the real monies like the one i mentioned or say Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I guess it's reasonable to say one would enjoy these fully if this is done

Anyways, i really appreciate everyone's suggestions so far but please feel free to share openly with others and use this thread as a discussion for such things

Remember, no spoilers

ya i think that's good advice. especially for a viewer more familiar with western media it can take some experience to be able to fully appreciate some anime. whereas western film & tv is often focused on plot or perhaps "character development", anime (and other eastern art) is more about emotional evocation, and it can take some time to become fully sensitive to it (eg to really feel the soul of evangelion vs just seeing giant mecha battles). there are some series with a good mix of the two sides, such as steins;gate or mirai nikki to name a couple, which would probably be good entry points. of course the best anime is deep enough to watch multiple times so that's always an option if you're itching to watch a particular one.

a couple of short animes with lots of feels I enjoyed were Eve no Jikan (about android ethics) and Sakamichi no Apollon (about high school kids in the 60's who play Jazz, and by the same dude who did bebop and champloo)

Wouldn't go that far... It's great and that reflects in the high score that I have given it but in the 2nd part they tried too hard to delve deep into some serious topics and ended up just missing big time with the over the top symbolism.

intellectually it really doesn't compare to countless examples in literature, after all the content is based on a novice's understanding of psychology and some of the related philosophy, and as you say it delivers such a frenzy of symbolism so as to defeat meaning and interpretation. in this way it does not approach the depth of many other works of art. however that's not the basis i think it should be judged on--there's far more to the work than that. two musicians might play the same piece of music and create two entirely different experiences based on the energy and feeling they put in. likewise two directors could (even more easily) start with the same script and come up with two entirely different feeling films. i don't know how analytic one can or should get about this aspect of art, i try to just feel it. to me it feels like evangelion drives as far out as any work of art i've experienced, i can feel the artist's passion burning through the frames. i think just as SPOILER the mother's soul is sent out into space in the eva as eternal testament to the existence of humanity, anno was able to put his soul into the work. but idk, that's just my opinion

Don't insult me like that. There are very few good dubs, and even then they generally aren't worth watching. The reason it's 2/10 is because there was no story. What could have been story was instead split into four episodes over the whole series. Cowboy Bebop could have been amazing, but they wasted that potential by making it solely a monster of the week anime and relying on the viewer to come back based on their love for the characters.

lol me too man.. the ending was quite touching, although i feel they could have set it up better with a different storytelling structure. but idk, maybe the off pacing and exposition backloading is part of its charm.

hehe sorry, no insult intended. i must agree with you about the wasted potential due to the episodic style. definitely would have been nice to see it build to higher highs with its overall story as many series do, or at least get that extra consistency and voice that a persistent narrative can achieve. that didn't invalidate the whole work for me though, sometimes a slow burn that just kinda dissipates rather than going anywhere is ok. fits with the relaxed cool vibe of the series.

My list is better than Ark's list. Bebop wasn't about the story; it was about the characters with an overarching story influencing these characters. And it was awesome.

Watch all 10s. Except maybe Inferno Cop because it might not be your cup of tea. I really like the 9s and would highly recommend those. 8s are ok and 7s are meh. Lower I don't recommend unless bored and out of other things to watch.

Finally, someone has Madoka with a 10. Man I really REALLY love that anime, it's ****ing crazy. I've only seen a couple of episodes of Bebop though I've generally heard it's masterpiece; you ****ed that one up Ark. Anyways, your contribution is greatly appreciated, anything else you'd like to provide here is immensely welcomed.

Default Lupin the iii

Lupin the III is by far the best anime i have ever seen. I have seen many anime but this one just takes the cake. Lupin the third and his awesome gang will never fail in there heists. From robbing banks, countries, or even crime syndicates he always gets what he wants in such a stylish fashion. Definitely something you want to watch if you have not already done so. Made by the same creator as cowboy bebop one of the most famous animes in america.
honorable mention goes to naruto, one piece, steins gate, berserk, maison ikkoku, ruroni kenshin, ruroni kenshin trust and betrayel, black lagoon, and elfen leid. lupin-iii.jpg

No, they ****ed that one up. Cowboy Bebop was not a good anime. I can't speak for the manga or movie, as I've yet to read/watch them, but the anime wasn't good. The only good thing about the anime was that Spike, Jet, and Ed were interesting characters. The reason why it's considered a masterpiece by a lot of NA fans is because they watched it as a kid. The nostalgia goggles make it seem like a strong anime when it's really quite weak. Same thing with DBZ.

About Madoka: I didn't find it that entertaining or interesting. I understand why people would like it, and I do respect it, which is why I rated it so high. If I found it entertaining it would have been a 9 or 10.

But that's the problem. There was no overarching story. All it was is a bunch of one-shots, 4 episodes that could have been expanded to an overarching story, and a few interesting characters. That's it. And saying Bebop isn't about the story is like saying reading a book isn't about the story. Even watching a comedy anime is about the story. Baka Test and Azumanga Daioh are good examples of this.

I'm gonna stick up for Ark on saying that the main anime series of Cowboy Bebop is slightly overrated by most people. I don't think it was as bad to be worth a 2/10, but I probably would be more borderline 5/10. Been a while since I saw it, but not many of the supporting characters/plots are particularly memorable, and the overarching story is a bit bland.

HOWEVER, the film is pretty decent imo. Utilizing the characters well, with a decent antagonist and good plot. 8/10.

Anyone watched Another? I enjoyed it way too much but I can't let go of its ending. The simplest melody seems to me to be the greatest.
