This is the person who i would appreciate not every playing again. And, I am all for freedom of speech and cultural-perspective—but this guy always goes to far: hitler. see for yourself:

He's not even a very good player, so just keep wasting him until he moves on and leaves.

The best trolls I've ever jousted with were not even playing, just spectating. I managed to help my team blow up base while countering their rubbish insults.

I type fast when I'm angry.

I played a couple of games with him (AH) this weekend, he insulted a few people till some one bit, he then taunted that person relentlessly.
Someone then pointed out the mute function, this was used and AH left promptly, made me smile really

Any specific reason you guys get pissed and then proceed to:

a) actually care (it's the internet)
b) not mute the guy

?

What if Altitude had a Bayesian system based on what muted and non-muted players say? Set a threshold of, say, 2-3 mutes. Have the Altitude clients record chat and submit to the Nimby server. Then, when a message is similar enough to the messages in the mute database, Altitude pops a "press M to mute %username%."

Perhaps the Bayesian algorithm could weight messages by how muted the player is as well as frequency of the words in the mute database. It might decide that "kill Jews" is 95% likely to be mute-worthy, whereas "**** you" may only be 60% likely to be inappropriate. It should also consider chat history - if a user played for a year before his first mute, the chat leading up to it and following it should be weighted much more heavily than early chat. Same goes for a player who started off poorly but grew up. And of course, the system should probably take an "innocent until proven guilty approach" by giving a lot of credit for using popular words on the non-mute list.

You've jumped right into the technical aspect without considering the practicallity.

I'm going to swear like a sailor during my entire post to emphasize my point: If I'm playing with my ****ing friends and we all swear as much as we ****ing like because we're ****ing Australian, I don't want some thunder-***ish message popping up on my screen offering to mute them. First, it's ****-hole annoying, second, it is implying I'm too ****-****ing stupid to mute them myself and I need it done for me.

You need to consider that people from different countries feel differently about swearing; for example, I once got banned for a week off a server by an American admin for saying 'goddamn'. I could say that this is because I didn't consider how different countries felt about what is inappropriate, but honestly, that **** was just ****ing stupid.

A much simpler and more practical idea is simply have a way of pointing out/explaining the mute function to new players when they first load up the game, instead of introducing some over-teched scriptwizardry to do everything for them.

Good call. Perhaps it would use a threshold relative to a player's own mutability. So if your messages are .6 muteworthy and the relative threshold is .3, you'd never see it until your friends started saying .9 messages like "kill the Jews." Whereas your friends would trip the warning for me, who would probably rank around .0-.2.

Should also have a desensitization feature for people who don't mute players when presented with the message. So that .3 threshold might expand over time to, say, .6 if I don't do anything.

But it would be most practical to auto-mute, at least temporarily, when these thresholds are exceeded.

Ignoring the fact that you're still taking a very unnecessary solution to a simple problem, why would you want to introduce AUTOMATIC INTERNET CENSORSHIP?

Why can't people pick and choose who they want to mute? Why do we need an algorithim to do it for us? It is totally unnecessary for an action so simple.

Well, you might as well ask that about an e-mail spam filter. It's so simple to delete, so why the complicated Bayesian setup. But it works really well, people appreciate not being distracted and most of the offensive stuff is never seen.

But really it's just fun to speculate about new ideas.

Oh, if its just speculation then thats fine

Honestly the whole thing would be fine as long as there's an option to turn it completely off.
