Default -Altitude Race Championship-

Altitude Race Championship

Type: Race

20 participants

---RULES---

4 weeks of group racing, plus 1 championship race for group winners.

2 map/circuit per week. Each race will have a pre-defined plane which all players must use. Races take between 2 and 5 minutes. Players will be allowed to gather and practice before the race. Races will always begin so that they have completed within 30 minutes of the scheduled start time. If a player is so late that the race must start without them, they will receive 0 points for that race.

The 20 players are split in 5 groups of 4 players. Groups will be made to optimize ping and time zone, the groups are:

Code:
Group Region Description Players
----- -------- ----------------------- ----------------------------
I EU (Saturday UTC 20:00/8PM) Jonus, Toma, Neophyten, Omni.
II Americas (Saturday UTC 21:00/9PM) Biell, Soneji, Brutal, Ufo.
III EU (Sunday UTC 18:00/6PM) Reddragon, Evel, Stam, Smile.
IV Americas (Sunday UTC 21:00/9PM) Fart, Slender, Woofy, Oyster.
V APac (Sunday UTC 11:00/11AM) Paiza, Unlock, Demu, Moon.
Participants, please provide your country and for large countries (Russia, US, Canada) please also provide your time zone. Every attempt will be made to organize this event so that race times are convenient for people from all countries and regions.

The Winners of each group by points after 8 races will proceed to a single, final race where placement defines overall rank. The winner of the final race is the ARC winner! Laps times will be compared to the 100th of a second for precise results.

Game order is :
Code:
Week Plane Map Date
---- ------- ------------------------ ---------
  1 Loopy ball_race_silverstone 23-24 Jan
  1 Randa ball_race_eastern_creek 23-24 Jan
  2 Biplane ball_race_gauntlet 30-31 Jan
  2 Whale ball_race_balloon 30-31 Jan

  3 Randa ball_race_mayhem 6-7 Feb
  3 Loopy ball_race_forest 6-7 Feb
  3 TBD ball_race_YoshiDesert 6-7 Feb
  3 TBD ball_race_ShyGuyBeach 6-7 Feb

Final Any ball_race_asteroids TBD
TBD = To Be Determined.

Race maps are available on the Team+ server for practice. European races will take place on "ARC 1". North/Central American races will take place on "ARC 2".
East Asian races will take place on "ARC 3". Also, in ARC players will always be assigned to the same team to ensure randa warping and whale remote detonation cannot affect other players.

Points System
Code:
Place Points
----- ------
 1st 4
 2nd 3
 3rd 2
 4th 1
You receive 0 points for a missed race. Points will be awarded inside each group to determine the winner of that group after 6 weeks. The winners of each group proceed to the finals. The final race should be the only one where the start time may be inconvenient. The time of the final race will be chosen after consultation with the participants.

Few things I saw around:

1. Groups II and V are the exact same
2. First half of group IV could be already in group I
3. Remaining half of this^ could be just Europe as group IV

Groups will be made to optimize ping and time zone.

I was thinking to have:

2 USA groups
1 EU group
1 Asia group
1 EU+USA group

groups will be made when sign ups are closed so that we know all participants time zones.

Woof, sadly there arent free-spots left.
The amount of interest was much higher than expected.
If all goes well, the next 1 will be organized without a players limit and with a different format.

Now that sign ups are closed, we can work on making the groups.

UPDATE

A rather important update so please listen up!

In case you haven't seen Toma's post earlier, admission is CLOSED. Yep, in about 3 days, we were able to fill up all the spots. We didn't expect this much interest in the ARC and we're sorry about all those others that are unable to enter. However, we're likely to hold one more of this in the future, and will probably be able to hold and ARC without a player limit, or at least a higher player limit. We'll also be able to implement more ways to improve the way the league is organised, after listening to feedback from you guys.

More importantly, we've changed the format for the group stages. We've made it such that we'll be having 2 races per day/week, instead of one. This will mean that we're racing 8 tracks in total, over 4 weeks. We'll let you guys know soon about the planes that are going to be used, as well as the tracks. Hope you guys are fine with this!

See you on the track!

Hi is there any chance you could split the pools into mouse and non-mouse? If not I predict a resounding mouse victory

Great idea Fartface, but what if players decide to cheat by joining the nonmouse group, and still use mouse? I guess they will be disqualified...

You should probably have asked us about this earlier lol

It's too late now to change the groups, we probably could implement this idea in the next championship though(this championship is our first so we're trying some things out)

Don't know if unlock, dyke and moon use mouse. But for the rest, they should be all kb players.

Fart, Slender, Woofy, Oyster.
Your group is 100% kb players.

I'm using mouse/kb hybrid and they saw me do "OK" on a few race maps. Now, I have only used kb for a very, and i want to emphasise 'very' short period of time, so I can't speak from a kb users perspective, but I am of an opinion that mouse+kb is a superior control scheme and any motion to prove it as such (like establishing different groups for this tourny) I am in favour of.

Bow down to the hybrid master race.

On a more serious note... I definitely see an advantage in terms of maximising travel distance to the next corner of the race track that mouse has. I can make a b-line towards the next turn assuming I can see it on the screen by simply placing my mouse pointer on it. KB users would have to estimate whether they are traveling on a straight line towards the turn. Hence a slight advantage on every single stretch which could add up over the course of the race.
Another thing about traversing in straight lines... On ShyGuyBeach the left most 'tunnel' part of the map is extremely easy with a mouse since I can make a straight line through it. On the other hand I've seen a bunch of players crash there when I played them earlier in the day. Might me something to take a closer look at if the conversation on this topic continues.

<-this is where another point would have went but I realised that im rambling too much->

Regional servers are created.

European races will take place on "ARC 1".
North/Central American races will take place on "ARC 2".
East Asian races will take place on "ARC 3".

All three servers have ball_race_silverstone and ball_race_eastern_creek. These servers are configured for these two maps, with their league lap counts (league races will have more laps). Players will be forced into loopy on silverstone, and randa on eastern_creek. Please practice with these planes during the week to prepare for the next weekend.

We will update the race table this week with the newer 2 races per weekend schedule.

Anyone reading this who didn't get a chance to sign up (from US preferably - so you don't lag in the USA group), post on here.

After actually trying out a few of the race maps, I'm not a huge fan of the game mode. I'd rather someone who'd have more fun be able to participate.

I'd agree that mouse is better and should be in a different class, but it is not impossible for a keyboard user to win. Keyboarders just have to put up a flawless round, whereas mousers just have to not crash.

Thanks Kafka, for letting us know.

Thanks.
