Default Altitude won't recognize Steam running

Good afternoon,

I am one of those Free-to-Play weekend Altitude newcomers who purchased Altitude through Steam. Unfortunately, that means I am subjected to having Steam running to launch Altitude. For the past months, this has not been an issue. However, today I have received the dreaded "Steam must be running in order to play ALtitude. Please exit and launch Altitude from Steam."

Steps I have taken to try and resolve the issue

1. Obviously, Steam was running. After exiting Altitude, I exited out of Steam. I re-opened Steam and attempted to run Altitude through Steam's interface. I received the same error message.

2. I restarted my computer and tried again. Same error message.

3. I uninstalled Altitude through Steam. Restarted computer. Reinstalled Altitude. Same error message.

My Computer

I am running a Mid-2009 MBP OSX 10.7.3 with a C2D processor.

Possible issue

The only, only thing I see that has changed since last night when I played to today is 1 software update that was installed on my computer.

Today, Apple released Java for OSX 2012-001 Version 1.0 for my computer, which was installed. Per Apple's Support Site, this updates Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_31. This is for all OSX Lion (10.7) users.

If I'm not mistaken, Altitude runs on Java.

That being said, is this version of Java responsible for Altitude's inability to work assuming something isn't wrong between Steam and Altitude's servers? If so, then I urge all those with OSX 10.7 to avoid installing this update. If not, what other troubleshooting steps should I attempt to get this issue resolved?

Thank you in advance,

soccernamlak

EDIT: I should probably point out that installing Altitude from Nimbly's website or attempting to play online will be pointless as Steam users have their VaporID tied with their Steam account. As such, there was no registration of Altitude through a personal email account; hence no way to login outside of Steam.

I have the same problem. I am using a similar mac setup launching the game through Steam.

I also had the java update yesterday.

My attempts to get the game to work have included completely removing steam and all games from my machine and re-installing and re-downloading the game.

After this the game launches, downloads an update then exits. Then as the game restarts I get the dreaded message about Steam not running. I press exit and I get taken back to Steam.

Definitely sounds like this is related to the Java update. Please send all files in your Altitude log directory, path should be something like

/Users/<usernalme>/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/altitude/log

To support@nimblygames.com and I'll take a look.

Thank you in advance! I just sent you an email. Subject is "Java Issue - Steam/Altitude after Java Update." My email address should be recognizable.

Let me know if you need anything else; I appreciate it in advance!

A fix for the Steam-Mac version is now available. It may take some time for the Steam crew to push this update out so we put together a patch you can apply manually in the meantime. You will need to extract the zip file http://nimblygames.com/altitude/test...o_altitude.zip directly to the Steam altitude folder, e.g.

/Users/<user>/Library/Application\ Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/altitude

It should overwrite a few files including game.jar

You should now be able to launch Altitude without any error messages.

And as a quick FYI for those running Mac OSX 10.7 who can't seem to see a Library folder within their user file the normal way (Macintosh HD, etc.), in Finder, hold alt/option and click on the Go Menu Bar. If you are still holding alt/option, you should see a new link called "Library." This is <user>/Library.

Have you tried restarting your computer and reinstalling Altitude? If that doesn't work please send the files in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\altitude\log
to support@nimblygames.com

Having same issue with Windows 7 Pro x64.

Altitude was functioning fine via Steam up until last night's update.

Have done the following:

* Download and reinstall Altitude binary from altitudegame.com
* Restart the system
* Install latest Windows updates
* Remove altitude common dir and .ncf files from \steamdata
* Download and install Altitude via Steam
* Run (installs updates and restarts)
* =(

Will send log directory from fresh install to support.

I just started having this problem tonight, after an update was downloaded.

I've tried to restart Steam, restart my PC, and uninstall/reinstall Altitude, with no luck.

I'm running an older PC with Win XP.

Edit to Add:
My launch.log file shows:
WARN [2013-04-03 21:06:26,593] [main]: Launcher failed to load progress report from update\download\_update-progress.xml/

...and my Altitude.log shows this:
INFO [2013-04-03 21:06:30,203] [main]: Distributor is steam
INFO [2013-04-03 21:06:31,359] [main]: Client not using steam

Thanks for the quick response. I just checked again. The Steam cache did not update any files, but it seems to be working again.

Cheers!
