Default U.S. torture report poll

So the paper I work for runs polls every now and then about various things. Their newest poll's results are pretty disturbing imo:

Poll
Should the U.S. ever use torture against prisoners and detainees?

18% Never

13% In rare circumstances, and very limited

35% What the U.S. has used during the War on Terror is just about right.

33% The U.S. has not used torture enough against its enemies.

— Number of votes cast: 475

What do you guys think? I was surprised to see nearly 70% of people say we need to use the same amount of torture, if not more.

I think the numbers would change if people were taught that torture is utterly illegal, as defined in the 3rd Geneva Convention. When the U.S. ratified the 1984 Convention Against Torture, that eliminated any doubt that we were exempt from the international treaty. Yet after 9/11, Bush contracted the writing of the Bybee memorandum, which narrowed the definition of torture to make our practices seem legally permissible.

Many people probably think torture is okay in retribution. It is not. If you think it is, I dare you to volunteer to be waterboarded, starved, or otherwise dehumanized.

Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

Reminds me of a bunch of bioethical scandals in the US back in the 60's-70's I studied on a philosophy course last semester, which really only brought discussions with no real conclusion and abnormally divided opinions.

I guess one can only go as far as to argue about it but nothing more.

This makes me sad It's disturbing how many people believe that torture should be the answer to terrorism. Besides, if the US start torturing people again, the anti-western propaganda will start mentioning that Americans want to torture people...

Isn't crime a dehumanized act itself? One can easily stand besides rd.
