Default No sound in Ubuntu 11.10

Is anyone else having this problem? I've just switched from windows to ubuntu and installed Altitude, but the in game sound effects or music are not playing. The title screen music works fine, but that's not very usefull
Anyone know why this is hapening? If not I'll just try the windows version via Wine.

I have the same problem, but on ubuntu 11.04. I don't think this is a problem with ubuntu per se, as the sound does work in the menu. Altitude.log lists a lot of exceptions similar to the following, with various .wav files:

Code:
ERROR [2012-03-26 19:20:44,653] [main]: Failed to initialize audio data for /home/douwe/games/altitude/resources/run/.sound/sounds/planes/bomber/engine_stall.wav

All these errors are the same otherwise. Looking further, if AudioInputStreams are used, this seems to be a known problem: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5...-not-supported

I would really appreciate this being fixed.

Ubuntu has proven to be a moving target (every 6 months when they do a new release Altitude breaks...) anyone feel like testing Altitude with wine on their ubuntu? (http://www.winehq.org/)

I installed altitude using Wine 1.4, and it works perfectly so far. So no problems there.. Seems a bit a waste to let the linux port go, just for this problem, especially since I bought it in part because of the native linux support, but I understand that's not my decision to make.

We whole heartedly want to fully support linux but we dont have the man power to do so. We use an old version of LWJGL that has issues with the latest versions of ubuntu and we've tried upgrading to the latest LWJGL but it has problems on windows and mac...

Hopefully some day we'll be able to fix the issues in LWJGL but right now we don't have any spare developer time.

Hi, i had this exact same problem as you described. and the solution for me was to switch to using Sun Java, Ubuntu gives you OpenJDK through the repositories which apparently doesn't work correctly with this game.

here are some links for instructions, use the correct one for you version of ubuntu.
