Default Moving Servers

Hey all --

I was just informed that Phong will no longer be able to host the ladder servers, proleague servers, and minecraft servers for us starting at some point in the next week or so. We will be investigating what options we have. I'm not sure when exactly ladder and proleague servers will go down and when we will be able to create new ones and get everything all set up. I'm currently looking into getting my own server that we can then use for proleague, ladder, minecraft, etc. I'm also working with Aki to backup everything we can prior to this.

I'll let you know as I know more.

PS: Thanks Phong for the many years of awesome hosting <3

Thank you Phong for the many hours in Ladder, the many games in SL/APL, and the endless nights of getting just one more diamond.

Better for this to happen before a season and not during a season. Also, some timings can't be helped.

Lucky to have them this long. Thanks a ton Phong!

I have a server currently up called 'AT Test Server'. It's running on Amazon EC2, and I'm cool with spinning up however many are needed on Sundays for SL/APL/any other tourney.
It is in no-way battle-worn, so I don't know how viable it is for competitive play.
But please check it out and send me any issues you may have.

All my gratitude to his service, without it I'd never have sunk nearly 1800 hours into Altitude..so far.

Would it be possible for Karlam to host an official tournament server which would be managed by selected members of the community?

Thank you phong for your contribution, your servers have had a big impact on the longevity of the competitive Altitude.

Just set up a test on Amazon EC2 Free Usage Tier (just realized carlos also has one - guess I missed that post before). Not sure how much it can handle due to low memory (613mb), but not really sure the minimum needed.

I doubt one EC2 instance can handle both league and ladder, but maybe if we are lucky one instance would be able to host either league or ladder.

If you aren't familiar with the EC2 free usage tier, it is currently offered free for 1 year so anyone can sign up and test it out if they want.

US East (N Virginia) servers for testing, named EC2 USA League 1 & 2, Football (USA East) #1 & #2 [figure that is bound to fill up and be a good test lol]

Got 7-8 people in a game and seemed to be working well enough that I might suggest attempting to scrim in one of the servers (pm me for admin). Pings for the most part seem pretty good.

Update: Euro servers created for testing, named EC2 Euro League 1-4

Looks like my ping to Euro servers is averaging about 145 to 150 from Colorado, USA which is just a little better than I am getting from other EU servers. I assume this is probably since EC2 is based in Ireland which is slightly closer to US (think other servers are UK are otherwise to the east?).

I will run both temporarily but will likely take the UK servers offline in a few days. The free usage tier only provides enough "hours" to continuously run a single EC2 micro instance each month.

Is a specific platform (Linux or Windows) needed for ladder servers? Not really sure how the stats are collected.

Hm after some searching found a quote from phong: "The amazon linux ec2 micro instance dedicated for eu ladder is $25/mo, give or take a few. "

Interesting, so assuming this euro server worked well while it was up that seems to confirm that ec2 micro should be able to host ladder unless the specs have changed. I figured there was a good chance it could handle league, but maybe ladder will be doable too.

Edit: Also have found some really cheap Linux servers with good specs at http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/ugvps-...lo-chicago-la/
Usually wouldn't trust that cheap, but comments on the host seem positive.

Well I actually had said "maybe", I don't know for sure yet if I'm moving still waiting to hear back should know by next Fri. I just wanted to give the heads up so the configs can be copied, since if things go as planned I'll probably need to kill the servers quickly.

OpenVZ uses linux containers (and not actual VMs), they're similar to Solaris Zones or FreeBSD jails. The network performance therefore will be much closer to a dedicated server than a virtual machine. What we require here is the lowest latency possible and I think this is a better option than going with Windows hyper-V or an abstracted (non-para virtualized) virtual machine solution. Virtio is good for great throughput but the latency sucks. Last time I checked, they don't really prioritize acknowledge packets and while you crank up the TCP window size to ridic amounts, the latency will suffer for TCP stacks on the other end with smaller window sizes.

To answer you original question: since alti runs as a java process, I think both Linux and Windows should be fine.

Linux and Windows are both fine for running a normal server but additional features from the community are usually going to be platform specific (unless of course they are remade for the other platforms).

I have been told by phong that migrating to redhat based Linux would be easiest.

As a heads up - ladder will be ending tomorrow on account of Phong's servers being taken down. APL and Ladder servers will be officially gone sometime tonight / tomorrow.

Still welcome to use my servers if anyone figures out how to set up ladder.

Have 1 EU and 2 USA servers for Altitude.

Carlos and I are planning to write a new ladder, but we have been too busy so far IRL. If ladder stays down it will definitely push us to get to work on this though.

I've been very busy this past week otherwise I would have started on Ladder2 as soon as I heard the news.
This upcoming week I don't have much going on so I'll try and throw together a beta. I'll keep you all posted.
