Default How to >use< dedicated server

I've got the Steam version of Altitude. I thought it would be fun to try playing with my brother who does not own the game. So I've read the info on how to setup a private server. I then tried starting altitude.exe demo (that he would be using) and it asked me to login or create an account????

How can I tell altitude.exe to use a private server that I will be setting up?

Or does one always have to go through some central server to make the connection?

When I start my own copy of altitude (Steam) it does not ask me to login--it appears that there's some sort of default associated with my Steam account.

Could someone shed some light on what's happening? Thanks.

When you use steam, the game is tied to your steam account and must be launched from steam. Steam handles the saving and authentication.

When you run the standalone exe you need to specify an account because it won't know who you are otherwise. You will have to make him a generic account (register with an e-mail) and then he will be able to log in. Note that you don't have to buy the game - you simply have to register.

Does that make sense? Hope that helps

Thanks for the quick reply.

Just to make sure I totally understand...

The 'private server' that I start still requires this central login server to actually make the connection? In other words, my private server will somehow register on this central server, my brother will connect to that server via his new account, and >then< he'd be able to connect to my private server. Do I have the correct understanding here?

One more: would I have to use the demo altitude.exe or would I be able to use my Steam version?

I'm pretty sure that all servers connect to the central Altitude service even if they are "private."

To join any server, you will have to log in to Altitude and find your server from the list of servers to connect to (like 99% sure on this). You can log in to Altitude from Steam or from the standalone game.
